McCarron, Dutton to speak at Thoroughbreds For All event April 26

The Retired Racehorse Training Project and New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program will host their annual "Thoroughbreds For All" event to promote the adoption of ex-racehorses on Friday, April 26 from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

The event, which is held in conjunction with the Rolex Kentucky three-day event, will be held at West Wind Farm in Lexington, Ky.

The evening begins with a southern-style dinner and cash bar followed by educational sessions that include selecting the right horse for a particular job and how to work with off-the-track Thoroughbreds.

Australian stud farm Eliza Park for sale

Eliza Park, one of Australia’s top breeding operations, has been put on the market to be sold.

The Eastern Australian operation comprises six properties in Victoria and Queensland. Those properties, along with shares and standing rights to 14 stallions, will be sold by public tender through bloodstock auction company William Inglis. Expressions of interest will be called before a closing tender date of April 26.

Max’s Pal relocates to New England Stallion Station

Max’s Pal, a Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner, has been relocated to New England Stallion Station in Fitchburg, Mass., where he will stand for an advertised fee of $1,000.

The 16-year-old son of Marquetry had previously stood at Indiana Stallion Station near Anderson, Ind. He has sired eight crops of racing age, led by stakes winners Heaven’s Flame, Max Me Out, and Ready to Rock, as well as Jamaican champion English Storm and Dominican champion Maximus Jet. His progeny have earned over $4.4 million to date.

Rachel Alexandra is still displaying positive signs, such as a good appetite, as the 2009 Horse of the Year continues her recovery from abdominal surgery for foaling complications performed last month at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance names new board members

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, an accrediting and fundraising body for aftercare facilities, has named four new members to its board of directors.

Joining the board will be Jimmy Bell, president of Darley America; Craig Bernick, president and CEO of Glen Hill Farm; Bob Elliston, chief operating officer of Breeders Cup Ltd.; and Rachel Kukulewich, national manager of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society.

La Ville Rouge, the dam of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, and Easter Bunnette, the dam of 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, each produced fillies in early March at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky.

DRF Breeding Weekend Wrap: Lukas pair solidify Derby credentials

Activity on the Kentucky Derby trail was relatively light last weekend, as Saturday’s Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park was the only prep race scheduled awarding point to the top finishers. It proved to be one of the most exciting prep races to date, however, as the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Will Take Charge and Oxbow battled through the final sixteenth before Will Take Charge prevailed by a head.

Bill Peters, owner of Mariah’s Storm, dies

Bill Peters, who owned multiple Grade 2 winner and prominent broodmare Mariah’s Storm during her racing career, died Feb. 17 at age 86 after a short illness.

A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Peters worked in land development and road construction and raced under the name Thunderhead Farms.

Jessica Gay Bell, co-founder of Jonabell Farm, dies at 90

Jessica Gay Bell, who with her husband John A. Bell III established Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Ky., which went on to become one of the most successful Kentucky horse farms of the late 20th century, died on March 14 in Naples, Fla., after a brief illness at age 90.
