Prominent U.S. runners have played a key role in the development of the Japanese breeding and racing program into an international superpower. Chief among those, of course, is Horse of the Year Sunday Silence, with the 1989 Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner becoming a breed-shaping sire in Japan.
Sunday Silence appears in the pedigree of all four Japanese-bred colts who are considered potential Kentucky Derby candidates. However, other American expatriates figure prominently in this quartet, as well.
Two Phil’s visited two Thoroughbred auctions in as many years but did not change hands at either one. Instead, it was trainer Larry Rivelli’s relationships, and a longtime client, that led to the private purchase of Two Phil’s, now a multiple graded stakes winner and prominent Kentucky Derby hopeful following his win in the Grade 3, $700,000 Jeff Ruby last Saturday at Turfway Park.

The under-tack preview show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale of 2-year-olds in training concluded Friday with colts by Good Magic and Not This Time sharing the bullet work.
The two colts each breezed a furlong, the traditional measuring stick for juvenile sales, in 9 3/5 seconds on the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface. The four-day breeze show, from Tuesday to Friday, precedes next week's sale, which takes place over three sessions from Monday to Wednesday to kick off the 2-year-old sale season in North America.
Japanese champion Heart's Cry, a son of the legendary Sunday Silence who went on to become a prominent sire in his own right, has died at the age of 22, the Japanese Racing Authority reported on Friday.
Heart’s Cry was bred by the Shadai Stallion Station and resided there.
"I heard from the Shadai staff that he was happy and healthy until the end,” Shadai Farm CEO Teruya Yoshida told the Racing Post. “He produced so many top horses as a stallion, and he was also the horse who helped to break through the barriers and anxieties of overseas racing trips.
