Wide Country, stakes winner and broodmare, dies in Delaware

Pensioned broodmare and multiple stakes winner Wide Country died Oct. 9 at the farm where she lived out her retirement in Middletown, Del. The Magesterial mare was 25.

A Maryland-bred bred campaigned by Thomas Tanner, Wide Country won 12 of 26 starts, earning $819,728. That included a streak of eight consecutive stakes victories from the fall of her juvenile campaign in 1990 through the following spring.

Include Me Out retired from racing

Include Me Out will be sent to Kentucky to be bred.

Two-time Grade 1 winner Include Me Out has been retired after two disappointing performances in recent months. Owner Samantha Siegel made the announcement Monday via Twitter.

Trained by Ron Ellis, Include Me Out won the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Invitational at Santa Anita and the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar in 2012. She was third in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Santa Anita last year.

Kettle Corn retired with an injury

Kettle Corn, winner of the San Diego Handicap, has been retired to stud.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Kettle Corn, winner of two graded stakes on synthetic tracks in the last two years, has been retired to stud because of a recent injury, trainer John Sadler said.

The injury was detected following a seventh-place finish by the 6-year-old Kettle Corn in the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita on Sept. 29. Owned by Lee and Susan Searing, Kettle Corn won 8 of 26 starts and earned $853,361.

Dullahan retired due to tendon injury

Dullahan has not started since the Breeders’ Cup Turf in November.

Dullahan, a multiple Grade 1 winner and half brother to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, has been retired from racing due to a tendon injury.

The 4-year-old Even the Score colt will be shipped to WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., where he will rehab from his injury under the guidance of farm trainer Richard Budge. He will be available for inspection at the farm as stud plans are determined in the coming weeks.

Breeders' Cup weanlings of 2013 nomination deadline on Tuesday

Breeders of Thoroughbred foals have until midnight Tuesday, Oct. 15, to submit a $500 nomination fee to make weanlings of 2013 eligible for the Breeders’ Cup and its stakes program, the Breeders’ Cup said Monday.

The one-time fee will make the horse eligible for the Breeders’ Cup’s events for its lifetime.

Reckless Abandon retired to Darley’s Kildangan Stud

Reckless Abandon, a Group 1 winner in England and France, has been retired and will stand the 2014 breeding season at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Co. Kildare, Ireland. A fee will be announced at a later date.

The 3-year-old Exchange Rate colt excelled at the sprint distances, going undefeated in his first five starts, a run which included victories in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and Group 2 Norfolk Stakes in England, and the Group 1 Prix Morny and Group 2 Prix Robert Papin in France.

Camelot, three-time classic winner, retired

Camelot won the English 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, and the Irish Derby this year.

Camelot, whose quest to become the first English Triple Crown winner since 1970 was thwarted by three-quarters of a length, has been retired from racing after coming up lame Monday morning, according to his Coolmore Stud-affiliated owners.

The 4-year-old son of Montjeu will make his debut as a stallion in 2014, standing at Coolmore’s Irish base in Co. Tipperary, Ireland. He had been training toward a start in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 2.

California stud McCann’s Mojave euthanized due to colic

ARCADIA, Calif. – The California stallion McCann’s Mojave, who won the 2007 Sunshine Millions Classic and seven other stakes, was euthanized Friday due to colic, according to owner Mike Willman.

Willman, the publicity director at Santa Anita, was the co-breeder and owner of McCann’s Mojave during a racing career that included 12 wins in 35 starts and earnings of $1,513,565. Willman bred McCann’s Mojave with Nikki Hunt.

Ultimate Eagle, who won three graded stakes and earned over $540,000 on the racetrack, has been retired to stand at at Rick Taylor’s Special T Thoroughbreds in Temecula, Calif. A 2014 fee for the 5-year-old Mizzen Mast horse will be announced at a later date.
