Explosive Girl, multiple stakes winner and broodmare, dead at 29

Explosive Girl, who took part in a 1988 match race with Who Doctor Who, died of natural causes at Caines Stallion Station in Wynnewood, Okla., on Oct. 9, said her owner, Ellen Caines. Explosive Girl was 29.

Jim Wells, who raced Explosive Girl, gave the mare to close friend Caines in 2005. Explosive Girl, who won 15 of 40 races including eight stakes and earned $467,592, had been retired from breeding after producing her last foal in 2008. She was living out her days at Caines Stallion Station.

Novellist, Group 1 winner, retired and sold to Shadai Farm

Novellist, a Group 1 winner in four countries, was sold to the Yoshida Family’s Shadai Corporation in Hokkaido, Japan, where he will begin his stallion career in 2014. The story was originally reported by Thoroughbred Daily News.

The 4-year-old son of Monsun raced the majority of his career in Germany. There, he tallied four group stakes wins, highlighted by the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden in his final career start.

TAA, CARMA to promote aftercare awareness at Breeders’ Cup

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) and California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) will have a presence at the Breeders’ Cup Nov. 1 and 2 at Santa Anita Park, in order to raise awareness and support for Thoroughbred aftercare efforts.

The two organizations will be located near Santa Anita’s south entrance to hand out wristbands for fans to show their support for retired Thoroughbreds. The wristbands will be distributed free of charge, but donations are welcome.

Four stallions headed to Saudi Arabia

Regional stallions Keyed Entry, Patriot Act, Roaring Fever, and Zavata have all been sold to stand in Saudi Arabia in deals brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock.

Keyed Entry previously stood at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Fla. On the racetrack, he won four of 12 starts and earned $322,852 for owner Starlight Racing. He won the 2006 Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes and the 2007 Grade 3 Deputy Minister Handicap and finished third in the 2006 Grade 1 Wood Memorial. He set a track record of 1:27.12 for seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park in his Hutcheson win.

Jockey Club releases 2013 Report of Mares Bred

The Jockey Club released its 2013 Report of Mares Bred, which displayed a continued decline in the stallion population and the number of mares those stallions bred.

According to the report, which represents approximately 90 percent of the mares that eventually will be reported as bred in 2013, a total of 1,698 stallions covered 34,174 mares. Those numbers marked declines of nine percent and three percent respectively, compared to 2012, when 1,861 stallions covered 35,391 mares by last year’s deadline.

Lightnin N Thunder to Fruitful Acres in California

Multiple stakes-placed winner Lightnin N Thunder will stand at Vincent Harris’ Fruitful Acres Farm in Aguanga, Calif. for the 2014 breeding season, for an advertised fee of $2,000.

The 12-year-old son of Storm Cat had previously stood at Front Runner Thoroughbreds in West Alexandria, Ohio.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Lightnin N Thunder won one of four starts for that operation during his racing career and placed in a pair of stakes races for earnings of $68,510.

Equineline introduces Report of Mares bred product

Individual Report of Mares Bred information by sire is now available for purchase via the Equineline website.

Customers can order reports on individual stalliona in a pdf format by breeding year, commencing with 2013, or buy a subscription that provides unlimited access to all stallions for the 2013 breeding year.

The reports include the name of each mare bred with their year of birth, sire, and information on their last reported live foal. If a mare has not produced a foal, the report includes the name of the mare’s owner when she last raced.

Elite Squadron to Swifty Farms in Indiana

Grade 2 winner Elite Squadron will relocate to Swifty Farms in Seymour, Ind., for the 2014 breeding season, BloodHorse reports.

The 9-year-old son of Officer previously stood at Wintergreen Stallion Station in Midway, Ky. His stud fee will be $2,500.

Vinery’s Kentucky facility sold to Chilean company

Chilean interests have purchased the Kentucky operation of Tom Simon’s Vinery, Ltd., which was put on the market last year, in a multi-million dollar deal.

Don Alberto Corp, a division of the Chilean-based Bethia Holdings, purchased the 440-acre Lexington, Ky., property for $13.82 million. The property had been listed on the market for $13.97 million. The sale, which closed last Friday, was first reported by Paulick Report.
