Alternation retired, will stand at his owner's Pin Oak Stud

Alternation won five stakes during 2012, including the Oaklawn Handicap.

Alternation, who rose to prominence last year when he won five stakes including the Grade 2, $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap, has been retired and will stand at the Pin Oak Stud operation of his breeder and owner, Josephine Abercrombie.

A fee has not yet been set, according to Clifford Barry, general manager of Pin Oak.

Darley to auction off stallion seasons online

Darley’s American breeding operation will auction off seasons to three of its stallions, selling online without reserve. The Lexington, Ky.-based wing of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Darley operation, based at Jonabell Farm, will offer one season each to Lonhro, Medaglia d’Oro, and Street Sense through standard “stands and nurses” terms.

Data Link retired, to stand at Claiborne Farm

Grade 1 winner Data Link has been retired from racing and will begin his stallion career in 2014 at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky.

The 5-year-old son of War Front finishes his career with eight wins from 18 races for earnings of $831,335. Four of those wins came in graded stakes company, highlighted by the Grade 1 Makers 46 Mile at Keeneland Race Course in 2012. Data Link, who was trained by Shug McGaughey, also set a course record on the Monmouth Park turf at 1 1/8 miles, winning the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes in the same year.

A.P. Indy’s son Pulpit has developed quite a reputation as a sire of sires over the past few years, primarily through the exploits of his son Tapit, who has soared near the top of both racetrack and commercial sire lists.

One great son does not a sire of sires make, but Pulpit has several other successful sons at stud, led by Sky Mesa, who enjoyed another successful weekend last week, when the 3-year-old filly Sky Girl won the Grade 3 Dogwood Stakes and the 2-year-old filly Aibhilin captured the Selima Stakes.

Wrote, Duke of Mischief to stand in Florida

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Wrote and multiple graded stakes winner Duke of Mischief will stand the 2014 breeding season at Northwest Stud near Ocala, Fla. Stud fees for both will be announced at a later date.

Irish-bred Wrote, a 4-year-old son of High Chaparral, retires with three wins from 11 starts for earnings of $815,943. Group 2 placed as a juvenile in Ireland, he successfully invaded the U.S. to capture the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs. He was multiple Group 2 placed the following season, including a third in the U.A.E. Derby.

Leroidesanimaux to stand in England

Champion Leroidesanimaux, seen here winning the 2005 Atto Mile, will continue his stud career in England.

Champion Leroidesanimaux, sire of Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, will relocate overseas to stand at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, England beginning in 2014.

The 13-year-old Candy Stripes horse most recently stood at HallMarc Stallions in Ocala, Fla. He will be available for inspection by breeders in England beginning in November, with a 2014 fee to be announced.

Dayjur, English champion and sire, dies at 26

Dayjur, an English champion who provided one of the most memorable moments in Breeders’ Cup history when runner-up in the 1990 Sprint, was euthanized Wednesday at Sheikh Hamdan al-Maktoum’s Shadwell Farm in Lexington, Ky., due to the infirmities of old age. The son of Danzig was 26.

“Dayjur was one great racehorse,” Shadwell vice president Rick Nichols said. “He gave Sheikh Hamdan, and all of us at Shadwell, many great thrills. He was the cornerstone of our stallion operation, and he was a wonderful horse to be around. He will be deeply missed.”

AQHA files appeal in cloning lawsuit

The American Quarter Horse Association filed a Notice of Appeal on Monday to begin the process to overturn an August 22 ruling requiring the breed organization to accept cloned horses.

The ruling upheld a jury’s decision on July 30 in favor of plaintiffs Jason Abraham and Gregg Veneklasen, who claimed the AQHA violated antitrust laws when it denied registration to at least eight cloned horses belonging to Abraham.

Grade 1 winner So Many Ways has been sold to Katsumi Yoshida’s Northern Farm of Hokkaido, Japan to begin a broodmare career, owner Maggi Moss announced on Monday.

The 3-year-old Sightseeing filly, who scored her biggest victory in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes last year at Saratoga Race Course, concluded her career with a victory in the Charles Town Oaks Saturday night. She retires with five wins from 10 career starts, including additional Grade 3 triumphs in the Schuylerville Stakes and Eight Belles Stakes, and $717,148 in earnings.
