Veterinarian Brooke Bowman and Louis Merryman have formed a new stallion operation, Heritage Stallions, on property that was formerly part of the original Windfields Farm near Chesapeake City, Md.

The farm’s inaugural stallion roster will include Hunters Bay, Canada’s champion older male of 2012, who retires to stud after a career that featured six wins in 14 starts for earnings of $611,091. Homebred in Kentucky by Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs, the 6-year-old Ghostzapper horse won the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes and Eclipse Stakes during his championship season.

Grade 1 winner Bullsbay will relocate to Northview PA in Peach Bottom, Pa., for the 2014 breeding season.

The 9-year-old son of Tiznow stood his first three seasons at the Maryland division of Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md. He will be represented by his first 2-year-olds to race in 2014.

Bullsbay was a winner of 7 of 25 starts during his on-track career for earnings of $923,245. He was among the leading horses in the handicap division in 2009, winning the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap and the Grade 3 Alysheba Stakes during that campaign.

Grade 1 winner Coil’s advertised fee will remain at $5,000 as he enters his second year of stud at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, Calif.

The 5-year-old son of Point Given won seven of 14 career starts for earnings of $1,154,360, highlighted by wins in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and Santa Anita Sprint Championship, as well as the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes and Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap.

Prominent European sire Invincible Spirit will stand the 2014 breeding season for a fee of 70,000 Euros, or about $94,650 in U.S. funds, the Irish National Stud in Co. Kildare, Ireland, has announced.

Invincible Spirit, a 16-year-old son of Green Desert out of French Oaks winner Rafha, by Kris, was a Group 1 winner on the racecourse and has become one of Europe’s most successful sires over the past several years. His fee for next season represents a raise from 65,000 Euros in 2013.

Champion sprinter Trinniberg has been retired from racing and will join the six horses that comprise Vinery’s New York stallion roster in moving to Lere Visagie’s Rockridge Stud in Hudson, N.Y. for the 2014 breeding season.

From a genetic point of view, it is arguable that the male line of a given sire is the least important part of any pedigree. Compared with other chromosomes, the Y chromosome that determines gender is tiny and carries very little other information.

However, because of the structure of the Thoroughbred industry – basically because sires produce so many more foals per year than mares – sire lines are perceived to be enormously important, and the waxing and waning of those lines can determine whether a given Grade 1 winner even gets an opportunity at stud.

Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso will stand at Darley’s farm on the island of Hokkaido, Japan for the 2014 breeding season. A fee will be announced at a later date.

A homebred by prominent Darley stallion Dubawi, Monterosso emerged in England in the spring of his 3-year-old season, capturing the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot over subsequent St. Leger winner Arctic Cosmos. The following year, he shipped to Dubai to win the Group 2 Dubai City of Gold before subsequently finishing a close third in the Dubai World Cup behind Victoire Pisa.

Becky Thomas's Sequel Stallions in Hudson, N.Y., has released the fees for its 2014 stallion roster, with all returning stallions remaining at their 2013 levels.

Perennial leading New York sire Freud will stand for an advertised fee of $10,000. The 15-year-old son of Storm Cat is the sire of nine crops of racing age; his top runners are led by Grade 1 winners Giant Ryan and Franny Freud.

Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md. will feature a pair of new additions on its stallion roster for the 2014 breeding season.

E Dubai will transfer from Northview’s Pennsylvania location to its Maryland farm for the upcoming season, standing for a fee of $5,000. He stood the previous season for $7,500.

Grade 2 winner Unbridled Energy will relocate to Hubel Farms in Clare, Mich., for the 2014 breeding season, standing for an advertised fee of $2,000.

The 11-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song stood the 2013 season at Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona, Calif. Hubel Farms will offer discounts for multiple mares.

Unbridled Energy has sired four crops of racing age, with 91 winners from 139 foals to race, earning over $4.5 million. His progeny are led by stakes winners It’s My Party, Sterling Madame, Miss Buxley, and B Team.
