Smiling Tiger to Harris Farms for 2015

Smiling Tiger will stand for his second season as a sire at Harris Farms.

Multiple Grade 1 winner and young sire Smiling Tiger will relocate to Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., for the 2015 breeding season.

The 7-year-old son of Hold That Tiger debuted at stud in 2014, standing at Premier Equine Center in Oakdale, Calif., for an advertised fee of $5,000. He will stand for the same fee in 2015.

Ryan named Adena Springs general manager

Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs has hired Eoin Ryan to succeed Eric Hamelback as the operation’s general manager.

Ryan, a native of Co. Tipperary, Ireland, spent 11 years with Coolmore America and most recently managed Glenwood Farm in Versailles, Ky.

“Adena Springs is a world-class program with first rate facilities and personnel,” Ryan said. “I am very excited about the opportunity that Mr. Stronach has made available to me, and I am looking forward to the challenge with great enthusiasm.”

Retired OBS director of sales Gulick dies at 92

Bob Gulick, former director of sales at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co., died on Aug. 30 in Ocala, Fla. He was 92.

Gulick, a World War II and Korean War Army veteran and a graduate of Ohio State University, worked at the Ohio Thoroughbred Center for 10 years and also bred and owned horses before joining OBS, according to published obituaries.

Jockey Club T.I.P. program announces non-competition award winners

The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) program announced recipients of its two non-competition awards for 2014 on Monday. The T.I.P. Thoroughbred of the Year Award was given to Nightwatch, and the T.I.P. Young Rider of the Year Award was split among five riders.

He was precocious enough to win the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes as a 2-year-old. He trained on at 3 to win the Kentucky Derby in impressive fashion. He hails from the best female family in the American Stud Book. He is a correct, exceptionally handsome individual, beautifully balanced, and an outstanding mover.

Fast Bullet to stand at WinStar in 2015

Grade 2 winner and young stallion Fast Bullet will relocate to stand at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., in 2015. The horse entered stud at Ben Walden Jr. and Elaine Walden’s Pauls Mill Farm, which returned to the stallion business in 2014 but will not stand a roster next year.

Fast Bullet joins his sire, champion Speightstown, on the roster at Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm, for a stud fee to be determined. He stood his debut season for an advertised fee of $7,500.

Big Blue Kitten, Real Solution to stand at Ramsey Farm in 2015

Multiple Grade 1 winner Big Blue Kitten, making his first start since November, makes a late surge under Joe Bravo to win the Lure.

Big Blue Kitten and Real Solution, a pair of multiple Grade 1-winning homebreds by Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s leading sire Kitten’s Joy, will retire at the end of this season to make their stallion debuts in 2015 at Ramsey Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.

The duo will remain in training for the immediate future, and will be the first sons of Kitten’s Joy to stand alongside their sire in Kentucky upon their retirements. They will join Foreclosed in Illinois and William’s Kitten in Ohio among the sons of Kitten’s Joy at stud.

Palace Malice injured, retired at 4

Palace Malice retires with $2,676,135 in earnings.

Palace Malice, the winner of last year’s Belmont Stakes and this year’s Metropolitan Handicap, has been retired with bone bruising to his left hind cannon bone.

Palace Malice finished sixth as the favorite in the Grade 1 Whitney on Aug. 2 at Saratoga and returned to the work tab twice following the race, with the results prompting his connections to send the 4-year-old Curlin colt for further examination.
