Sparkman: Curlin stages comeback

Justin N. Lane
Keen Ice, a son of Curlin, defeated Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

The offspring of dual leading sire Smart Strike rarely have been noted for their physical beauty. His best son, Curlin, is no exception. He is a big, strong, reasonably correct horse with an impressive shoulder and muscular quarters, and he is sturdy and workmanlike but reminds no one of an Alfred Munnings oil painting.

Simon: Owners pay tab while leaving bill to others

Who owns the racing game? The answer to that question should be the deciding factor when it comes to who makes the critical decisions on how the sport is managed – and that includes whether the sport should seek federal help to set up a national test lab and establish federal guidelines for all states that conduct Thoroughbred racing if those states want their tracks to be able to simulcast races across state lines.

Sparkman: Nerud was a modern Wizard of the Turf

Barbara D. Livingston
John Nerud in 2004 at his home in Long Island.

The first racehorse I ever fell in love with was Gallant Man. His trainer was John Nerud.

Although I had no way of knowing as a 10-year-old farm boy in rural Tennessee, Gallant Man was not Nerud’s first top racehorse, and he was certainly not his last. Born in 1913 on a ranch near Minatare, a small hamlet in western Nebraska, Nerud was one of nine children of pioneer stock and grew up in the classic pioneer setting of a dirt-floor log cabin.
