Sparkman: Iltis female line breeds on

Shigeki Kikkawa
Fanticola, whose first career stakes win came Jan. 17 in the Megahertz, will go for a second stakes Sunday in the Wishing Well at Santa Anita.

Although flashy, high-profile stallions tend to get all the publicity, the key to building a breeding program in a regional market requires good broodmares. Ease of transportation today makes it possible for broodmares to be sent to national breeding centers such as Kentucky to be covered by top sires, but if the broodmare population for a state program is not up to national standards, that program will not consistently produce top-level horses, regardless of the quality of its stallions.

Sparkman: Ward, Hasili in spotlight at Royal Ascot

Barbara D. Livingston
Undrafted will probably not race again until September, when he could return to England for the Haydock Sprint Cup.

American trainer Wesley Ward has a good thing going.

Six years ago, the innovative former champion apprentice rider turned trainer suspected some of his more advanced American-bred and -trained 2-year-olds might be more precocious and advanced than their European counterparts and American riding tactics could give them a further advantage over the slower-starting Europeans. When his good older sprinter Cannonball was invited to participate in the King’s Stand Stakes at the 2009 Royal Ascot meeting, he decided to test that theory at Ascot’s prestigious June festival.

Horse health: The search for natural dewormers

by Denise Steffanus

Diligence of horse owners in keeping their horses free of parasites has resulted in overuse of dewormers. As a result, resistance to current classes of dewormers is a mounting problem worldwide, especially in roundworms and strongyles.

Roundworms, or ascarids, hatch in the stomach and then migrate through the bloodstream to the lungs and liver, where they can cause serious damage and even death, especially in foals and young horses.
