Uncle Mo's first winner returns in style

Outwork kicked off what would become a phenomenal freshman season for young sire Uncle Mo last April when he won his debut at Keeneland, becoming his sire’s first starter and first winner. The colt subsequently went to the sidelines for physical reasons but made a smashing return Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, rolling by 4 1/4 lengths in an optional-claiming event for 3-year-olds and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 77.

An early Triple Crown nominee, Outwork certainly is playing catch-up for owner and breeder Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher, who also campaigned his sire.

Tapit, Uncle Mo had value in November futures

Sparkman: Dirt pedigrees for dirt at Meydan

Meydan Racecourse’s switch from Tapeta to a dirt surface for the 2015 Dubai World Cup did not produce the expected result. The best available American dirt horse did run in the World Cup for the first time in three years, but California Chrome was beaten by the second-rate 8-year-old Prince Bishop, a horse with a very similar background to four of the five previous winners on Tapeta.

If the results of the year’s first World Cup preps at Meydan on Feb. 2 are any indication, however, that is highly likely to change at the 2016 World Cup.

Owners benefit from increased purses in 2015

Good news for owners: Purses are still going up despite what looks like a downslide in racing. That’s because total handle has remained relatively steady, actually showing a slight uptick year over year, while the number of runners and the number of races has declined, which boosts key measures.

According to information from The Jockey Club, in North America in 2015, purses totaled $1.154 billion, up 1.4% from the $1.17 billion in purses won in 2014. The important average purse per race figure increased 4.3% from 2014, to $27,341, an all-time high.
