Medaglia d'Oro posts big results in Saturday stakes

Emily Shields
Songbird (red cap) wins her fifth straight race in the Las Virgenes Stakes on Saturday.

Prominent young sire Medaglia d’Oro enjoyed an outstanding weekend on the racetrack, with champion daughter Songbird picking up right where she left off in her 2016 debut in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita, and Mshawish and Valid sweeping the exacta in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

Songbird led at every point of call in the Las Virgenes, cruising to victory by 6 1/2 lengths while geared down in the lane. She has won all five of her starts, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, by a combined 28 1/2 lengths.

Representing a tenuous line

Debra Roma
Sunny Ridge earned an 87 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the Withers.

Once known as one of the three great American lines of the early 20th century, the male line of the 19th-century imported stallion Eclipse, by Orlando, has long been on figurative life support. Since he is a gelding, Sunny Ridge, by Holy Bull, winner of last weekend’s Grade 3 Withers Stakes, can do nothing to revive the line, but he is a reminder of how valuable this uniquely American line has been to the Thoroughbred.

Stroud’s Lane Farm debuts with new stallions

Barbara D. Livingston
Seek Again trains at Saratoga on Thursday morning ahead of Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap.

Opening up shop as a stallion operation brings with it an undeniable degree of risk. Doing so with a trio of first-year stallions makes it that much more interesting.

Stroud’s Lane Farm in Reddick, Fla., will take on that bold task in 2016, standing Grade 1 winners Seek Again and Admiral Kitten, as well as multiple Group 2 winner Daddy Long Legs, all of which will make their debut at stud.

American Pharoah launches stud career

Barbara D. Livingston
American Pharoah will stand his debut season for $200,000 at Ashford Stud.

American Pharoah’s place in racing’s pantheon was cemented the early evening of June 6, 2015, as he rolled through the stretch at Belmont Park with thousands of cameras and cell phones thrust skyward to forever capture the moment.

The Triple Crown winner’s ultimate legacy to the Thoroughbred breed is, however, still very much a work in progress.

Old English Rancho gets big boost from What a View

Shigeki Kikkawa
What a View wins the California Cup Turf Classic on Jan. 30 at Santa Anita Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The gamble was there for all to see.

When entries were taken for last Saturday’s $250,000 California Cup Turf Classic at Santa Anita, What a View was the lone supplement, for $25,000, in the field of 12. The 5-year-old What a View was not nominated to the Golden State series as a yearling, requiring a hefty late payment. He was slow to develop on the track, a winner in his fourth start last August.
