Wootton Bassett was already a successful sire when he was purchased by the Coolmore group and moved from France to the international operation’s Irish headquarters. He has rapidly rewarded Coolmore, as his first Irish-conceived 2-year-olds on the track this year have been nothing short of sensational.

Europe’s leading juvenile sire and a top 10 general sire, Wootton Bassett is poised for continued success in international events – especially since Coolmore continues to bolster his book. The mares will include purchases made this month in Kentucky.

The two most recent winners of the Preakness Stakes have officially been retired and have taken up residence at their stallion homes.

Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Moira, who sold for $4.3 million to rank among the top prices of the Fasig-Tipton November sale, could continue racing before beginning her broodmare career in Australia.

Moira was purchased via an online bid using the moniker “Bayles.” That has been revealed to be the Australia-based Yulong Investments. The breeding season in Australia, in the Southern Hemisphere, runs from September through December, meaning the window to ship Moira and get her in foal this season is rapidly closing.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Jane Lyon, who bred and raised unbeaten 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline at her Summer Wind Farm, continued on as part of his racing partnership and now has welcomed several foals by the champion. She takes incredible pride in her horse’s accomplishments.

“It is more than pride,” she tried to explain. “It’s like your child graduates cum laude. He is such a dream come true for me. . . . I want to support him. Every time I go see him I get chills. I want so much for him to reproduce just a fraction of his ability.”

Perennial leading sire Medaglia d’Oro’s best shot for a Breeders’ Cup victory appeared to be Juvenile favorite East Avenue, but the Grade 1-winning colt stumbled badly at the start of the race and was never involved. The sire did chalk up a few longshot placings, with Nitrogen finishing third in the Juvenile Fillies Turf and Pleasant finishing third in the Filly and Mare Sprint.

But Medaglia d’Oro wasn’t completely shut out at the Breeders’ Cup. As his legacy continues to grow, two of his sons were represented by Breeders’ Cup winners.

Following the 41st edition of the Breeders’ Cup last weekend at Del Mar, there is now a logjam atop the event’s list of all-time leading sires, with some of the world’s standouts represented. Five-time reigning North American leading sire Into Mischief, the late, great shuttle sire More Than Ready, and European standout Dubawi each had a win on the weekend and are now tied with another leading American sire, Curlin, with eight career wins each at the event.

The first time the Breeders’ Cup was held at Del Mar, Gun Runner won the 2017 Classic – one of four Grade 1 wins in a Horse of the Year campaign. This year, as the Breeders’ Cup returned to Del Mar, Sierra Leone, a son of recently minted Hall of Famer Gun Runner, made his own case for championship honors with a victory in the Classic.

Immersive won the third Grade 1 stakes of her nascent career in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and is virtually assured the 2-year-old filly Eclipse Award title. The filly became the second winner of this race for her sire, Nyquist, who is on an upward trajectory into the nation’s elite sires.

Twenty years ago, Ghostzapper lived up to a family legacy when he bested one of the strongest Breeders’ Cup Classic fields assembled, leading home Roses In May – subsequent winner of the Dubai World Cup – by three lengths in a record-setting performance at Lone Star Park. Defending Classic and World Cup winner Pleasantly Perfect was third, and the also-rans in the field of 13 included 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri, Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, and dual classic winner and champion Funny Cide.
