Approaching the end of the Nureyev era

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The handsome bay stallion Nureyev is still standing at stud at age 24, but recent news is a reminder that the stallion's dancing days are nearly done.

His fertility was always fickle, but it has slipped the past few years, despite the best efforts of the veterinary staff at Walmac International, where Nureyev, a son of Northern Dancer, stands at stud. As a result of his lessening fertility, his book for 2002 will be restricted to mares owned or designated by shareholders.

Del Mar sale sets records

DEL MAR, Calif. - The Del Mar Yearling Sale set a record average price of $43,663 at the two-day event that ended at the Del Mar HorsePark on Tuesday.

Tuesday's session averaged $35,418, weaker than Monday's $52,918. Overall, the two-day average was an 18 percent increase over the previous record of $36,798 in 1999. The 2000 sale averaged $31,915.

Spend a Buck sold to Brazilian

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Spend a Buck, 1985 Horse of the Year and winner of that year's Kentucky Derby, has been sold to Brazilian breeder Antonio Lemgruber. Spend a Buck will relocate from Louisiana to Haras Bage do Sul, according to Kentucky-based bloodstock agent Jose De Camargo, who arranged the purchase.

Sez Who to add N.Y. farm

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The management team behind Sez Who Thoroughbreds, a commercial breeding operation in Ocala, Fla., will close Monday on the purchase of a farm outside of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The 265-acre facility in Stillwater, 12 miles south of Saratoga Springs, will be called Sez Who Thoroughbreds North and will function as a commercial breeding farm featuring New York-breds.

Cal.-bred fillies in demand at sale

DEL MAR, Calif. - Demand for California-bred fillies and a spirited bidding market helped propel the Del Mar Yearling Sale to new heights in Monday's opening session of the two-day sale at the Del Mar HorsePark.

Seven California-bred yearlings brought $100,000 or more and six were fillies. Overall, 49 horses sold for $2,593,000, an average price of $52,918, which was believed to be a record for a single session. The record average for the overall sale is $36,815, set in 1999.

Mula Gula back in training

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Grade 2 stakes-winner Mula Gula, who left the track last year after injuring a suspensory, has returned to training after standing the breeding season at a Washington farm.

A 5-year-old Lil E. Tee horse, Mula Gula covered mares at Ron and Nina Hagen's El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw, Wash., this year while recuperating from his injury. Farm officials would not disclose the number of mares he covered.

Sons of Peaks and Valleys top N.Y. sale

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Two New York-bred sons of Peaks and Valleys brought the two highest bids at Sunday's Fasig-Tipton preferred sale of yearlings in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Both the average and gross surpassed last year's sale, but the buy-back rate increased.

Smaller should be better for Del Mar Yearling Sale

DEL MAR, Calif. - Similar to the stock market, prices at the Del Mar Yearling Sale rose substantially in the late 1990's, only to fall last year.

This year's sale, which begins a two-day run at the Del Mar Horse Park at 7 p.m. Monday, tests the strength of the California yearling market and reflects changes made to the size of the sale and the type of horses admitted.
