Foal loss for '02 put at 5 pecent

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Jockey Club is projecting a 2002 North American registered foal crop of 35,600, a drop of nearly 5 percent largely caused by losses from Kentucky's mare reproductive loss syndrome.

"At this point, no one knows the exact extent to which MRLS will impact next year's foal crop," The Jockey Club's vice-president for registration, Matt Iuliano, said in a release issued Monday.

"Disparate estimates exist, although the most consistent figure quoted to us is that 20 percent of the mares bred in Kentucky this spring lost their pregnancies due to MRLS."

Pregnant mares monitored in study of foal death syndrome

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Months after at least 1,200 central Kentucky mares lost their fetuses in the mysterious mare reproductive loss syndrome of April and May, some researchers are monitoring pregnant mares to determine whether or not their fetuses are growing normally.

At a veterinary symposium hosted in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., by Cornell University and the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, reproductive veterinarians noted that the cause of MRLS remains unidentified, and they discussed concerns that fetuses that survived the epidemic might encounter developmental problems.

'Other' yearling gives breeder sweet thrill

Richard Day made breeding news headlines less than two years ago when he sold a $270,000 Cherokee Run colt who topped the Canadian Breeders' September select auction.

But the "other" yearling Day sold in 1999 gave the Ontario-based breeder his biggest thrill in racing on Aug. 11 at Woodbine.

Sweetest Thing, whom Day sold for $35,000 to trainer Roger Attfield, captured the $500,000 Breeders' Stakes, the third jewel of Canada's Triple Crown, by an impressive 7 1/2 lengths in just her fourth career start.
