Smoke Glacken refutes 'sprinters only' theory

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Not every top racehorse goes on to become a top sire, but among the freshman class of 2001, such high-quality racehorses as Siphon, Pulpit, Louis Quatorze, and Smoke Glacken have begun their stallion careers with a bang. Each has at least one graded stakes winner, and all of them appear to have their best racing ahead of them. This suggests that some of these freshman sires will have classic candidates next year, and one might even follow in the path of Maria's Mon and sire a classic winner from his initial crop of racers.

For some stallions, relocation is right

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Fall traditionally is a busy time for stallion relocations, as farms around the country settle deals to buy or sell stock in time for the upcoming breeding season.

In recent weeks, a number of young stallions with fees from $5,000 to $15,000 have shipped out of the Bluegrass, and the reasons behind some of the departures provide an indication of how competitive the stallion business is these days. They also provide some evidence that several states' breeding industries are gaining economic clout when it comes to luring stallions.

New theory on destructive syndromes

LEXINGTON, Ky. - As stallion and mare owners prepare for the 2002 breeding season, many wonder whether the syndromes that affected their horses this spring will repeat next year. No one has definitively established a single cause for the mare reproductive loss syndrome, swelling of the heart sac, and eye inflammation that appeared in 2001. But one of the front-line veterinarians who dealt with the heart symptoms, has a theory that may shed some light on at least a portion of the spring's damaging syndromes.

Old college roommates at it again with White Ibis

Several years ago, William Garbarini and Michael T. Martin campaigned Rush Chairman Bill, who was named the champion 2-year-old male among New York-breds in 1992.

It looks like history will repeat itself for Garbarini and Martin, who became buddies more than 40 years ago as college roommates at Rutgers University in New Jersey. The partners have another potential New York-bred champion on their hands in White Ibis, a 2-year-old gelded son of Distinctive Pro.
