This space could have been entirely occupied by three Fair Grounds races.
Golden Tempo smartly won his debut sprinting last month looking like a two-turn stakes horse, but his 8-1 morning-line odds in the Lecomte seem like a pipe dream. Reagan’s Wit’s price will be right in the Colonel E.R. Bradley, and while I’m picking him to win, I don’t have quite enough confidence to tout him.
Instead, we’ll bop around the country, making stops in Maryland and California.

This starter optional claimer didn't draw a very big field, but it's still a competitive race in which cases can be made for everyone. Southeastern (#1) may go favored for the powerful duo of Brad Cox and Flavien Prat. They teamed up for this gelding's maiden victory last time when he seemed to appreciate stretching out in distance, drawing off to win by over 7 lengths. A repeat of that 90 TimeformUS Speed Figure certainly puts him in the mix, but hardly makes him a standout in this field.
Workout videos available for public viewing started popping up a few years ago, the most horseplayer-friendly tool to appear in a long time. Alas, their availability has waned in recent months. Yes, it takes resource allocation to pay camera people and sort videos. It’s worth it! Here’s hoping the powers that be start feeling that way at some point.

Lots of earliest-season 3-year-old action this first Saturday of 2026. Tough sledding, these races, between formidable favorites and murk.
Smarty Jones
The late New Orleans turf writer and handicapper Bob Fortus coined the word a couple decades ago: jockeyology.
You know, the practice of assessing who rides horse X for trainer Y and what it all means. The term got deployed with a measure of disdain. There could be a million hidden reasons motivating jockey assignments. Focus on the horse.
