Churchill’s spring meet goes out with a bang this weekend, and Saturday’s card includes appearances by last year’s 3-year-old male and 3-year-old filly champions. I’m trying to take both down.
Stephen Foster
Mindframe’s a gorgeous horse. He was advanced physically as a 3-year-old, has a long, beautiful stride. What held him back last summer was his brain, not his body. Keeping that in mind, and if, as seems to be the case, Mindframe has his head in the game this year, he could be the value in the Foster, thanks to the presence of champion Sierra Leone.

Toscano (#3) figures to go favored here as he switches back to dirt after a turf experiment at Saratoga just 17 days ago. He actually put in a decent effort in that grass race, confirming that he's maintained strong form since the Mike Maker claim. He won convincingly going this distance on the dirt two back, but he was beating a weaker field on that occasion. He obviously makes sense in this spot, but he's pretty exposed and I didn't think he necessarily has to win this race at a short price.
Saratoga and Del Mar around a couple corners. For now, North Randall, Ohio.
Ohio Derby
Will Clever Again be the 9-5 favorite? How much support will McAfee attract? The questions arise because Chunk of Gold, listed as the 7-2 third choice, might offer value.
McAfee could go favored over Clever Again. Rick Dutrow trains McAfee, and his horses in spots like this often take more betting than they should. Dutrow sent him early to work over the track. He means business, apparently.

President Z (#8) is arguably the horse to beat as he drops in class. He is now in for a $16k tag after having not raced for a tag less than $32k since coming into the Rick Dutrow barn. His best effort will obviously beat this field. However, he was mildly disappointing against a soft field for the level at Monmouth last time, and needs to rebound for a barn that's been a little chilly in recent months.
