Los Alamitos racing resumes Sunday evening

Los Alamitos will conduct an eight-race mixed-breed program as scheduled on Sunday evening, a day after the track’s Saturday program was canceled out of concern of a potential chemical spill at a nearby aerospace facility.

The track announced early Sunday afternoon that racing would proceed. First post time is 5:45 p.m. Eastern.

The decision to race on Sunday was based on approval from the Orange County Fire Authority to resume “day-to-day activities” outside of an evacuation zone near the aerospace facility, the track said in a statement.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has run at least two horses in the Belmont Stakes in each of the last 13 years and 15 times overall.

He is likely to continue that trend this year. Already set to run Kentucky Derby runner-up Renegade in the 158th Belmont on June 6, Pletcher is strongly considering starting recent maiden winner Powershift as well. For the third straight year, this year’s Belmont will be run at Saratoga and at 1 1/4 miles.

Napoleon Solo’s win in the Preakness was the first Triple Crown win for Al Gold (right) and first starter for trainer Chad Summers (left).

LAUREL, Md. – Two years ago, after a lengthy period of frustration, Chad Summers was about to quit training horses.

The breaking point came on Aug. 17, 2024, when veterinarians at Monmouth Park were giving him a difficult time regarding running Instant Coffee in the Grade 3 Philip Iselin Stakes. Summers said he was forced to train the horse the morning of the race in order to satisfy the vets.
