Belmont 2026: Lack of early speed a negative for Golden Tempo, Renegade

Renegade (right) and Powershift, Todd Pletcher’s two Belmont hopefuls, worked a half-mile in 48.81 seconds Friday at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – As it gets closer to finalizing the field for the $2 million Belmont Stakes to be run next Saturday at Saratoga, one thing that’s becoming clear is the pace scenario will likely not be as torrid as it was in the Kentucky Derby five weeks ago.

Of course, that is likely to have a significant impact on Golden Tempo and Renegade, who took advantage of a fast pace to close from the back of the pack in finishing one-two in the Kentucky Derby.

New Belmont Park will open on limited basis with emphasis on fan experience

Susie Raisher
At 275,000 square feet, Belmont Park’s new building is one-third the size of the old one. With five floors, fans will have plenty of options on how they’d like to experience the new building.

ELMONT, N.Y. – It’s smaller, yes, but it’s not small. It’s a work in progress – and will be for several more months – but ultimately it will be a progressive facility.

The new Belmont Park, ready or not, will open Sept. 18, 38 months after the last race was held at Belmont Park. The smaller, sleeker building – at 275,000 square feet, it’s one-third the size of the old building – will be open on a limited basis to start. Only the first two floors will be open to the public and the fifth floor for operations/officials.

Dylan Davis, shown aboard Always a Runner after winning the Gazelle in April, suffered multiple injuries on Nov. 14 but somehow was able to resume riding on Feb. 28.

On April 4, five weeks after returning from serious injuries that sidelined him 106 days, jockey Dylan Davis won his first graded stakes when he guided Always a Runner to victory in the Grade 3 Gazelle at Aqueduct. That’s the good news.

Four weeks later, when Always a Runner won the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, it was Jose Ortiz who was on the filly’s back. Davis picked up the mount on Lovely Grey, who finished 12th in the 13-horse field.
