DEL MAR, Calif. - Kazushi Kimura did not sleep well on Saturday night.

He blamed the excitement of a memorable afternoon at Del Mar when, for the first time in his career, Kimura won two graded stakes on the same day in the United States.

“I had too much adrenaline,” Kimura said.

Kimura won his first Grade 1 in the United States aboard Tenma in the $301,000 Del Mar Debutante for trainer Bob Baffert, and later in the day won the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes on turf with Hang the Moon for Phil D’Amato.

Road to the Derby Series tweaked for 2025

Julie Wright
As part of the changes to the Road to the Derby Series, Colonial Downs, which is owned by Churchill Downs, will hold a brief March meeting that will include the Virginia Derby. The race will become a Derby qualifier and will be run on dirt, not turf.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby Series that determines preferences for horses getting into the Derby starting gate has been tweaked this year to award a lower total number of points in races that do not have at least six runners, Churchill Downs announced on Friday.

Under the change, any race that has five horses will award 75 percent of the total points available. Any race with four or fewer horses will award 50 percent of the total points.

Now 6, Best Pal winner Weston has won 14 straight on the Northwest fair circuit

Benoit Photo
Weston, trained by Mark Hanson, the brother of California horsemen Ryan Hanson, will race next week at Grants Pass.

The first time Idaho trainer Mark Hanson saw Weston he was visiting his brother Ryan’s offtrack stable in California in early 2020. Mark Hanson was not impressed.

“He was kind of scrawny,” Hanson recalled last weekend. “I thought, how is this thing going to win on the Southern California circuit?”

Hanson’s first impression was a little off the mark. Not only did Weston win a maiden race at 21-1 in his debut at Santa Anita in June 2020, but in his second start he won the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar that August.

Brown not sure BC Filly and Mare Turf will attract North America's best

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Chad Brown says he can't see North America's best showing up for a BC Filly and Mare Turf race run at 1 3/8 miles.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Chad Brown has won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf four times and, since 2012, is the only North American-based trainer to win the race. So, one would think he would have no issue with the fact the race has frequently changed distances depending at which venue the event is held.

Think again.
