Mott will take over training of Baeza; other Shirreffs horses dispersed

Barbara D. Livingston
Baeza joins a stable that also includes reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty. Baeza is expected to run mainly on the East Coast, but will be pointed to the Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Baeza, third in the Kentucky Derby last May, will be transferred to Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott following the death of trainer John Shirreffs last Thursday, majority owner Lee Searing said on Monday.

The decision, reached after consultation with co-owner Robert Clay’s Grandview Equine, gives Mott massive depth in the 4-year-old male division. Mott trains 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty, who won the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes last year.

Searing said there were three factors that led to the decision to send Baeza to Mott.

Sovereignty breezes three furlongs in first work since before Breeders' Cup

Barbara D. Livingston
Sovereignty has not started since dominating the Grade 1 Travers last August at Saratoga.

Horse of the Year Sovereignty made his much anticipated return to the work tab Sunday morning, breezing three furlongs in 37.40 seconds at trainer Bill Mott’s winter base at Payson Park. The work was the first for Sovereignty since he was taken out of consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Classic just four days before the race due to illness.

“He was kind of bucking a little bit yesterday, he’s usually pretty quiet going up to the track. It looked like he was going good, so I said let’s get started here,” Mott said when asked about the work.

Bella Ballerina (3) was given an 84 Beyer Speed Figure for Saturday's win in the Rachel Alexandra.

NEW ORLEANS - Bella Ballerina emerged from her hard-fought victory in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes in good shape, trainer Brendan Walsh said Sunday morning, but no plans have been set for her next start.

The two races in play are the Fair Grounds Oaks on March 21 and the Grade 1 Ashland on April 3 at Keeneland. Walsh and the filly’s owner, Godolphin, haven’t made a choice, but the Fair Grounds Oaks could be the more likely spot. That was the race that Bella Ballerina’s sister, the Walsh-trained Pretty Mischievous, used as a springboard to her 2023 Kentucky Oaks win.

Cella's idea provides big helping hand to backstretch workers at Oaklawn

Coady
Oaklawn has been providing low-cost meals to backstretch workers since December.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn Park President Lou Cella was picking up a few grocery items near the track before the start of the holiday meet in December when he had an experience that led him to roll out a new subsidized meal program for backstretch workers.

It’s been a hit.

Oaklawn has been offering hot meals at prices of $2, $3 and $5 to licensed backstretch workers at the track kitchen since the third week in December. Cella said the track had been selling about 40 “units a day” in a number that increased when the ice storm hit in late January.
