Kentucky Derby 2026: Renegade draws rail; DRF tabs Further Ado morning-line favorite

Tom Keyser
Renegade will have Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard in next Saturday's Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Renegade was among the last of the Kentucky Derby starters to arrive on the  grounds when his van from Florida came through the Churchill Downs gates around 2:45 a.m. Saturday.

About 12 hours later, Renegade was the second name called at the post-position draw, at which he was matched up with post 1. There was no truth to the rumor that his connections planned to put Renegade back on a van headed for Maryland and the Preakness in three weeks.

Kentucky Derby 2026: Cox trio has final work with chance to heal sting from last year’s scratch

Debra A. Roma
Commandment (left) had his final Kentucky Derby work Saturday at Churchill Downs, going five furlongs in 1:01.23

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mood around the Brad Cox barn a week before Kentucky Derby 152 was much more upbeat than it was the week before Kentucky Derby 151.

On Saturday, Cox put all three of his Kentucky Derby hopefuls – Commandment, Further Ado, and Fulleffort – through their final workouts at Churchill Downs and as well as they all went, the best part was they all seemed to come out of it sound and healthy.

Kentucky Derby 2026: Litmus Test in as Chip Honcho will await Preakness

Barbara D. Livingston
With the defection of Chip Honcho, Litmus Test will make the main body of the Kentucky Derby field and will be ridden by Martin Garcia.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The field for next Saturday’s Kentucky Derby underwent a slight revision just hours before the post-position draw as Chip Honcho was removed from consideration, opening up a spot for Litmus Test to join the field.

The Derby attracted 24 entrants, though only 20 will be permitted to run. Four horses were placed on the also-eligible list and will need a scratch by 9 a.m. Friday in order to get into the field.

Kentucky Derby 2026: So Happy works well despite typical morning laziness

Barbara D. Livingston
So Happy worked five furlongs in 1:00.38 Friday morning at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – If So Happy were a professional athlete, he might be akin to Allen Iverson, the NBA All-Star who had a disdain for practice.

Practice? Don’t talk to So Happy about practice.

“You wouldn’t buy him out of a sale breezing,” Mike Smith, the Hall of Fame jockey who has been So Happy’s regular rider, said Friday morning.

Kentucky Derby 2026: Casse expects better from a healthier Silent Tactic

Silent Tactic works at CD April 23 2026
Barbara D. Livingston
Silent Tactic was beaten four lengths by Renegade in the Arkansas Derby, but trainer Mark Casse does not believe that was his best race.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Silent Tactic finished four lengths behind Renegade in the Arkansas Derby four weeks ago, but it felt like the gap between the two 3-year-olds was larger than that.

Mark Casse, the trainer of Silent Tactic, understands his horse has to run better than he did that day to compete with Renegade but he believes his horse will run better.

Casse said that he and his team were nursing Silent Tactic through a bruised foot in the four weeks between the Grade 2 Rebel – in which Silent Tactic was beaten a nose by Class President – and the Arkansas Derby.
