In a rare appearance, Val Royal makes good

ELMONT, N.Y. - Val Royal, who missed all of last year with a tendon injury and most of this year with a foot problem, rallied from the back of the field to win Saturday's $1 million Breeders' Cup Mile at Belmont Park.

The victory gave jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. his first win in a Breeders' Cup race and gave owner David Milch and trainer Julio Canani their second victories in the series. Milch won the 1992 Juvenile with Gilded Time, while Canani saddled Silic when he won the 1999 Mile.

'Squirtle' ends Frankel Cup drought

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Bobby Frankel broke out of his Breeders' Cup funk with Squirtle Squirt's victory in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint at Belmont Park on Saturday afternoon.

Squirtle Squirt ($21.20) was a half-length winner over Xtra Heat, the pacesetter. Caller One, who pressed Xtra Heat, was third, a neck behind the runner-up. Swept Overboard put in a late run on the rail and finished fourth.

Kona Gold, the 7-2 favorite, was a disappointment, finishing seventh in his attempt to become the first repeat winner of the Sprint.

Banks Hill leaves the competition far behind

ELMONT, N Y - Banks Hill left little doubt as to the identity of the best female grass horse in the world when she drew off to a sensational 5 1/2-length victory over Spook Express in the Filly and Mare Turf on Saturday at Belmont Park.

The win gave owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms and jockey Olivier Peslier their first Breeders' Cup victories.

Lailani and England's Legend, co-favored at 5-2 after finishing first and second in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Handicap here three weeks ago, finished eighth and 11th, respectively.

Fantastic Light tops 1-2 European finish

ELMONT, N.Y. - Fantastic Light continued Europe's domination of the $2 million Breeders' Cup Turf with a hard-fought victory over fellow European Milan on Saturday at Belmont Park.

Fantastic Light launched a rally on the final turn, led by 2 1/2 lengths in the final furlong, and was all out to hold off Milan by three-quarters of a length. Sent off as the favorite, Fantastic Light ($4.80) finished 1 1/2 miles in 2:24.36, shaving 0.14 off Sky Classic's 1992 course record.

In a stretch duel that will be long remembered, reigning American Horse of the Year Tiznow outdueled 2001 Arc de Triomphe winner Sakhee in an epic, head-bobbing duel to win Saturday's $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic by a slim nose before a crowd of 52,987 at Belmont Park.

The heart-stopping finish made Cee's Stable Tiznow ($15.80) the first horse ever to win back-to-back editions of the Classic, while denying Sakhee of an unprecedented sweep of the Arc and BC Classic in the same year.

Flash: Undefeated Johannesburg takes Juvenile

ELMONT, N.Y. - Johannesburg proved himself the best 2-year-old colt in both Europe and the United States as the undefeated European champ swung out in the stretch and pulled away to a convincing 1 1/4-length triumph in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Odds-on favorite Officer, who came into the Juvenile with a perfect 5-for-5 record, broke slowly then rushed out to battle Came Home for the lead before wilting in the stretch and finishing fifth, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner.
