Mile: Val Royal's work is far from finished

ELMONT, N.Y. - The best may be yet to come from Val Royal, who won Saturday's $1,044,240 Breeders' Cup Mile in his third start of the year.

Twice in the last two years, Val Royal has battled back from injuries - a lesion in a tendon in October 1999 and a quarter crack in March - to rise to the top of his division.

His victory in Saturday's Mile, achieved in stakes record time of 1:32.05, was Val Royal's seventh win in 10 starts.

"His future is in front of him," trainer Julio Canani said. "He's like a 3-year-old. He hasn't run that many times."

Juvenile Fillies: Tempera leads Godolphin 1-2 punch

ELMONT, N.Y. - When Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin Racing decided to send a string of 2-year-olds to North America last year, it was with the specific purpose of developing horses for the Kentucky Derby.

Exogenous, Jump Start recovering

ELMONT, N.Y. - Two days after her horrifying fall, Exogenous continued to make progress at Belmont Park on Monday, leading to hope that she will recover fully from a severe concussion.

Scotty Schulhofer, who trains the filly for Vernon Heath's Centaur Farms, said Exogenous was "bright and alert" Monday morning. She has been confined to a stall since being taken in a horse ambulance to Schulhofer's barn after she fell only minutes before her scheduled start in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Destination? Louisville!

ELMONT, N.Y. - Ten years ago, a European-based colt named Arazi rocketed past the best 2-year-olds North America could muster to become a Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner, a champion, and a heavy winter book favorite for the Kentucky Derby.

In May 1992, Arazi finished eighth as the 4-5 favorite in the Kentucky Derby, the fourth of what has now become 10 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winners who failed to win America's most famous horse race.

Horse of the Year: Tiznow or Point Given?

ELMONT, N.Y. - If there's a race for Horse of the Year, it's a small field.

Point Given or reigning Horse of the Year Tiznow.

Those are only realistic options when Eclipse Award voters decide on the finest horse in the land during 2001.

BC morning roundup: Big day had by Euros, N.Y. heroes

ELMONT, N.Y. - Perhaps the biggest story of the 2001 Breeders' Cup was the exceptional performance of the European contingent and Godolphin, which won a combined four of eight races and nearly won a fifth with Sakhee coming up a nose short in the Classic.

European racing wasn't the only big winner Saturday at Belmont Park, however, as the New York Heroes Fund pocketed more than $2.5 million thanks to donations from Coolmore and Godolphin Racing.

Tiznow nips Sakhee by a nose

Tiznow (10), under Chris McCarron, defeats the Arc winner, Sakhee, by a nose to win his second consecutive Breeders' Cup Classic at Belmont Park Saturday. Last year, Giant's Causeway was his victim. Tiznow paid $15.80 to win.

ELMONT, N.Y. - The same stubbornness that Tiznow had been showing recently in his morning exercise served him at the most opportune time Saturday afternoon, when he outdueled Arc de Triomphe winner Sakhee in a thrilling stretch drive to win the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic, the highlight of the World Thoroughbred Championships at Belmont Park.

Johannesburg on top of the world

ELMONT, N.Y. - He had never been on dirt, had not raced beyond six furlongs, and was facing probably the deepest field in the history of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Johannesburg overcame those obstacles with a furious closing kick in the stretch that swept him past North America's best 2-year-olds and into the Belmont Park winner's circle, a 1 1/4-length victor in the $1 million Juvenile. Repent, a 42-1 shot, rallied for second 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Siphonic. Publication finished fourth, two lengths ahead of 3-5 favorite Officer.
