BC Sprint: Fog draws inside other speed horse

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Greg Gilchrist said he wasn't overly concerned about Wednesday's post position draw for Saturday's $1,060,000 - both before and after his undefeated Lost in the Fog drew post 7 in a field of 11 horses entered for the six-furlong race.

Lost in the Fog was established as the even-money favorite for the Sprint, which will go as the fourth of the eight Breeders' Cup races on Saturday's 10-race program at Belmont. He is expected to go off as the shortest-priced favorite on the card.

BC Turf: Alkaased defection leaves baker's dozen

ELMONT, N.Y. - Shakespeare and Azamour, major stakes winners in recent months, will start from the middle of the gate for Saturday's $2,280,000 Breeders' Cup Turf at Belmont Park. The field for the race was reduced to 13 after the withdrawal of Alkaased on Wednesday.

Shakespeare, the undefeated winner of the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park on Oct. 1, will break from post 5, and Azamour, a two-time Group 1 winner in England during the summer, will break from post 7.

BC Mile: Frankel will cope with rolling 11

Leroidesanimaux, here at Belmont with exercise rider Nuno Santo, is likely to be on or near the lead in Saturday's BC Mile.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bobby Frankel withdrew one horse, then watched his first-team miler draw an outside post when entries were taken and post positions assigned Wednesday morning for the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Leroidesanimaux, made the 7-5 morning-line favorite, drew post 11 in a field reduced to 12 by the Wednesday declaration of Three Valleys, Frankel's other prospective Mile starter. Three Valleys was found to have mucus in his lungs, a sign of infection, and was removed from consideration for the Mile. His next start could come in the Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park on Nov. 26.

BC F&M Turf: Mona Lisa must hope favorite falters

ELMONT, N.Y. - Defending champion Ouija Board will break from post 13 in the $1,060,000 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Belmont Park on Saturday. Her presence toward the outside in a field of 14 gives hope to the owner of the promising Mona Lisa, John Magnier.

Second in the Group 1 Prix de l'Opera in Paris on Oct. 2, Mona Lisa breaks from post 11. She is one of several fillies and mares in the field that could play a prominent role if Ouija Board does not duplicate her impressive performance in 2004 at Lone Star Park.

BC Distaff: Everything falls Happy Ticket's way

ELMONT, N.Y. - It was the perfect morning for trainer Andy Leggio on Wednesday. The rain that soaked the track on Tuesday yielded to a sunny, blustery day, his filly Happy Ticket turned in an eye-catching workout in preparation for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff on Saturday at Belmont Park, and then Happy Ticket drew the cozy post 7 when 13 were entered in the 1 1/8-mile race.

Sunny, main track/training track muddy; 39¦

ELMONT, N.Y. - Wednesday was the coldest day during Breeders' Cup week, both the main and training tracks remained muddy after another night of rain and the turf course continues to be a bog. But at least the sun finally came out for the first time in recent memory and the Europeans were out en masse after clearing quarantine.

BC Classic: Favorites fight foot problems

Horsephotos
Bago, a Turf contender, hits the Belmont training track Tuesday, one of few horses to brave the rain.

ELMONT, N.Y. - If there's one thing trainers of horse with foot problems dread, it's a track packed down to mitigate against rain. The surface can be jarring and exacerbate tender feet, and the water and sand can work their way into any fissure in the hoof wall, where they can cause mayhem.

BC Distaff: Year later, Stellar Jayne is still chasing Ashado

Horsephotos
Stellar Jayne's entire year has revolved around the Distaff, according to assistant trainer Rick Mettee.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Stellar Jayne was one of the workhorses of the 3-year-old filly crop of 2004. While Ashado rightly received acclaim, and a divisional championship, Stellar Jayne was not far behind.

In 13 starts that stretched from Jan. 4 through Oct. 30, she had five matches against Ashado, and though she finished behind the victorious Ashado in the Kentucky Oaks, Coaching Club American Oaks, and Breeders' Cup Distaff, Stellar Jayne did beat Ashado when winning the Mother Goose Stakes, and finished in front of Ashado in the Alabama Stakes.

BC F&M Turf: In deep field, Wend has no room for error

ELMONT, N.Y. - Wend, the 4-year-old filly trained by Bill Mott, missed winning the Grade 2 WinStar Galaxy at Keeneland on Oct. 9 by less than a length. That losing margin has kept her from being considered among the very top candidates for Saturday's $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Belmont Park.

Wend finished three-quarters of a length behind Intercontinental in the WinStar Galaxy, which was run over a mile on turf. It was a frustrating loss for Mott since Wend did not get away well, but flew home.
