Wheel of fortune turns Griffin's way

Horsephotos
Merv Griffin, 80, has been a Thoroughbred owner for more than a decade. He has high hopes for Stevie Wonderboy (above), the Del Mar Futurity winner, in Saturday's BC Juvenile.

Merv Griffin has won 15 Emmy Awards, had a No. 1 song, and created two of the most popular game shows in television history. A victory in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile with Stevie Wonderboy would trump it all.

"The Emmys are wonderful; there's nothing to match the winner's circle," Griffin said in a recent telephone interview.

Motion's second go-around no less a thrill

ELMONT, N.Y. - Graham Motion was an unknown trainer on the national stage when Better Talk Now pulled a 27-1 upset in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Lone Star Park last year.

A native of England, Motion, 41, has been reminding racegoers throughout the year that his Maryland-based operation turns out contenders in many of the nation's top races.

Cup purses are expected to rise

Horsephotos
Sand Springs, exercising with Leana Willaford on Tuesday, is an exception to trainer Bill Mott's reluctance to race females against males.

Breeders' Cup expects to raise the total amount of purses for its eight races from $14 million to $20 million within the next several years, the organization's president, D.G. Van Clief, said Thursday.

Van Clief said that a proposal to raise the purses in 2006 and 2007 will be discussed at the organization's next board meeting on Nov. 4. The proposal has already been endorsed by the racing and nomination committee of the Breeders' Cup, which last met in early October at Keeneland.
