With Uni and Newspaperofrecord, Brown has them coming and going in First Lady Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston

Uni needs to boost her racing energy, Newspaperofrecord must ration hers if trainer Chad Brown is going to win the First Lady Stakes for the third year running.

Calibrate, Founder get two-turn test in Breeders' Futurity

Barbara D. Livingston
Calibrate, with Ricardo Santana Jr. riding, wins a maiden race by 4 1/2 lengths at Saratoga.

Calibrate and Founder, impressive debut winners sprinting at Saratoga, meet in the Grade 1, $400,000 Breeders’ Futurity on Saturday at Keeneland, a crucial distance test for both that could set them on the path to even bigger things.

The 1 1/16-mile Futurity is the local prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, set for Nov. 6 at Keeneland, and awards the winner a berth into that championship-crucial event. The Futurity also awards its top finishers qualifying points toward the 2021 Kentucky Derby on a 10-4-2-1 scale.

Arnold has Leinster fresh for Woodford

Debra A. Roma
Leinster has emerged as a rising star in the turf sprint division.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Leinster is making just his third start of the year in the Grade 2, $150,000 Woodford Stakes on Saturday at Keeneland – and not by design. With the coronavirus pandemic disrupting racing schedules nationwide – including cancelling the Keeneland spring meet and postponing the following meet at Churchill Downs – he found himself in a holding pattern while training in Florida.

But the unplanned break may be a blessing in disguise as Leinster now eyes a graded stakes win on his favorite course, which will host the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in four weeks’ time.

Mo Forza returned from a layoff to win the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile in an impressive 1:33.27.

ARCADIA, Calif. – If the 16-year drought since a California horse won a Breeders’ Cup Mile ends this fall at Keeneland, it may hinge on what happens Saturday at Santa Anita.

Mo Forza, whose dazzling 1:33.27 mile was the most impressive turf performance of the Del Mar summer season, makes the second start of his campaign as the favorite in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile. This year’s field came up strong, for a welcome change.

Rockemperor could finally conquer all in Joe Hirsch

Barbara D. Livingston
Digital Age (left) and Rockemperor train last Sunday at Saratoga before shipping to Churchill Downs for Saturday’s Grade 1 Old Forester Turf Classic. Brown also entered Sacred Life.

ELMONT, N.Y. – As well as Rockemperor ran in his U.S. debut 15 months ago, it seemed only a matter of time before the Irish-bred colt would find his way to the winner’s circle in a significant race.

Despite some big performances over the last year-plus, Rockemperor is still looking to conquer all. Perhaps his time will come in Saturday’s Grade 1, $250,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic when he meets six rivals, three of whom he finished ahead of in the Grade 1 Manhattan in July.

Only four other entrants stand between one of McPeek’s trio – Crazy Beautiful, Oliviaofthedesert, and Simply Ravishing – joining She’s a Devil Due (2000), Take Charge Lady (2001), Dream Empress (2008), and Restless Rider (2018) as McPeek-trained Alcibiades winners.

“I think they all fit,” McPeek said.

Midnight Bisou sent to Rood and Riddle, will miss Spinster

Barbara D. Livingston
Midnight Bisou works a half-mile Monday morning at the Oklahoma training track in Saratoga. She later was deemed "off" by her connections and sent to Kentucky for evaluation.

Midnight Bisou, the reigning champion older female, will miss Sunday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland after coming out of a Monday workout at Saratoga a bit off, according to her connections.

Midnight Bisou was to be sent to Dr. Larry Bramlage at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., for a complete evaluation, according to Jeff Bloom, head of Bloom Racing, which owns Midnight Bisou in partnership with Madaket Stables and Allen Racing. Midnight Bisou is scheduled to leave Saratoga by van on Tuesday and be examined on Wednesday, Bloom said.
