Enable needs to overcome heavy ground to win third Arc

Racenews Photo
Enable broke a two-race losing streak in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Enable’s greatness has shined on two continents over four seasons. In races between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 miles on turf there has been no better horse, day in and day out, anywhere in the world since Enable came to the fore during her 3-year-old season of 2017. She already has joined the rarefied club of two-time winners of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but if she is to become the first three-time Arc winner, Enable will have to slog through a bog Sunday at Longchamp.

Brown primed to win another Miss Grillo

Plum Ali won the Mint Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Kentucky Downs last month.

ELMONT, N.Y. – There were some very impressive 2-year-old turf fillies who won at first asking this summer at Saratoga, and it seems all of them have gathered for a meeting in Sunday’s Grade 2, $150,000 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park.

While betting on Chad Brown-trained runners in the Miss Grillo has become a recipe for success –he’s won seven of the last eight runnings of this race – his pair of Freedomofthepress and Editor at Large will have plenty of competition.

Weaver gives slight lean to Breeders' Cup Sprint for Vekoma

Barbara D. Livingston
Vekoma has not raced since winning the Met Mile at Belmont on July 4.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Vekoma, unraced since winning the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on July 4, worked five furlongs in 1:02.65 on Friday morning at Saratoga as he continues preparations for a start in the Breeders’ Cup on Nov. 7 at Keeneland.

While it has not yet been determined which Breeders’ Cup race Vekoma will run in, trainer George Weaver seems to be favoring the $2 million Sprint at six furlongs over the $1 million Dirt Mile, which at Keeneland is a two-turn race. He will most likely be pre-entered for both races.

Big Fish, with Victor Espinoza up, rallies through the stretch to win the $102,500 Del Mar Juvenile Turf.

In his brief career, the 2-year-old gelding Big Fish has shown significant improvement in each of his two starts on turf, winning a maiden race Aug. 21 and the Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 7.

Another successful race in Sunday’s $100,000 Zuma Beach Stakes at a mile on turf could lead to a start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 6 at Keeneland.

“We have a lot to look forward to,” trainer David Hofmans said Friday. “If he does run well, we’ll look at the Breeders’ Cup.”

Tiz the Law smokes five furlongs in Breeders' Cup Classic work

Susie Raisher
Tiz the Law works five furlongs in 57.87 seconds on Friday at Belmont Park as he continues training toward the Breeders' Cup Classic.

ELMONT, N.Y. – There was a time immediately after the Kentucky Derby when Tiz the Law appeared a bit lethargic. That time has passed.

On Friday, in just his second work since his runner-up finish in the Kentucky Derby, Tiz the Law worked an extremely fast five furlongs in 57.87 seconds over the Belmont Park main track as the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner continues preparations for a scheduled start in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

Enable faces heavy ground in bid to win third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; Love rerouted to Breeders' Cup Turf

Racenews Photo
Enable broke a two-race losing streak in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The Arc’s loss appears to be the Breeders’ Cup’s gain.

Love, the standout Ireland-based 3-year-old filly, wasn’t among the 15 entries Thursday for Sunday’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris. That leaves Enable, seeking to become the first three-time Arc winner, as the favorite for the 1 1/2-mile fixture.

Yaupon dominates, stays undefeated in Chick Lang

Barbara D. Livingston
Yaupon powers to his fourth consecutive win in the Grade 3 Chick Lang Stakes.

BALTIMORE – A quiet Preakness Week at spectator-free Pimlico got under way Thursday when three sprint stakes shared the spotlight on a dry and mostly cloudy afternoon.

The only graded race of the trio, the Grade 3 Chick Lang, was run at six furlongs over a fast main track. The other two, the The Very One and the Jim McKay, both were run at five furlongs over a yielding turf course, whereas three other races scheduled for the turf on a 10-race card were transferred to the main track. No rain is in the forecast through the weekend.

Pilgrim Stakes looks like anyone's race

Barbara D. Livingston
Public Sector holds the field-high Beyer Speed Figure of 76, earned in his career debut.

One can probably make a good case both for and against each of the eight 2-year-olds entered for the Grade 2 Pilgrim Stakes on Saturday at Belmont Park, a race that serves as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Nov. 6.
