No immediate plans for Fingal's Cave after Bay Ridge win

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Fingal’s Cave looked good in her first start off a 14-month layoff, winning the Bay Ridge Stakes for New York-breds.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – With his focus being on races from April to November, trainer David Donk is somewhat in limbo with his filly Fingal’s Cave, who came off a 14-month layoff to win Thursday’s $100,000 Bay Ridge Stakes for New York-bred females at Aqueduct.

Donk said he will point Fingal’s Cave to open-company stakes. Races such as the Grade 1, $600,000 Madison on April 6 at Keeneland or the Ruffian, a one-mile stakes likely to be run in early or mid-May at Aqueduct, are somewhat intriguing to him.

Where and when Fingal’s Cave might run before then is still unsettled.

Twilight Gleaming ready for Abundantia off sharp work

Barbara D. Livingston
Twilight Gleaming’s 2023 campaign was highlighted by a win in the Giant’s Causeway at Keeneland. She has not started since a tiring fourth in the Grade 2 Franklin Stakes on Oct. 15.

HALLANDALE, Fla. – Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. knows a little something about Twilight Gleaming, having won three stakes from four opportunities aboard the speedy filly, including the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar in 2021.

So when he dismounted after breezing her four furlongs in 49.80 seconds on Dec. 20 at Payson Park with “a big smile on his face,” according to Wesley Ward, it had the trainer grinning from ear to ear as well. Twilight Gleaming makes her local debut in Sunday’s $100,000 Abundantia Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Regalo will cut back for Jerome

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though he has already won around two turns, Regalo will cut back to a one-turn mile when he starts in the $150,000 Jerome Stakes on Jan. 6 at Aqueduct.

The Jerome is the first of four races for 3-year-olds on this circuit to be run between January and April that offer qualifying points to the May 4 Kentucky Derby.

Regalo, a son of Maximus Mischief trained by Brittany Russell, won a seven-furlong maiden race in his second career start on Oct. 26 at Laurel and then came back to win a 1 1/16-mile first-level allowance race by 4 1/2 lengths on Dec. 9.

Signator more suited to Queens County

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Signator was considered for the Harlan’s Holiday, but was instead vanned Thursday to New York for the Queens County.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Even though he entered Signator in Saturday’s Grade 3 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes at Gulfstream Park, it was always trainer Shug McGaughey’s intent to run the improving 3-year-old son of Tapit in Sunday’s $150,000 Queens County Stakes at Aqueduct.

Once assured the Queens County would fill, McGaughey on Thursday put Signator on a van from Payson Park in Indiantown, Fla., headed to New York, where Signator will make his stakes debut in the nine-furlong Queens County.

Ruby Nell stands out in Lady of Shamrock Stakes

Benoit Photo
Ruby Nell wins the Unzip Me Stakes on Oct. 1 at Santa Anita.

Ruby Nell’s only losses in her last six starts since late May have been in Grade 1 races at Del Mar in August and November.

The other four wins include two stakes, a fine record that will leave her favored in Sunday’s $100,000 Lady of Shamrock Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf at Santa Anita.

Even her most recent loss, when fifth in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at a mile on turf on Dec. 3 at Del Mar, casts Ruby Nell in a positive light. She was the best-placed runner in a field of 12 not trained by Chad Brown.

Carpis looks to avoid bounce in Louisiana Futurity

Legalize. winner of the Sugar Bowl Stakes, is likely to try stretching out in the Lecomte at Fair Grounds.

It’s fair to say that when Carpis debuted Dec. 9 at Fair Grounds, a talented Louisiana-bred 2-year-old slipped through the cracks.

Carpis, ridden by Erica Murray, broke alertly, set a strong pace, and never wavered, coming home a 2 1/4-length winner of a Louisiana-bred maiden sprint. Carpis ran six furlongs in 1:10.94 and earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure, one of only two juvenile maiden winners this meet, Louisiana-bred or otherwise, to hit a number that high. All that, and Carpis paid $70.40 to win.
