Big Commerce looks to add to D'Angelo's Tampa hot streak

Tom Keyser
Everdoit returned to beat allowance foes after unseating his rider in the Sam Davis and a disappointing try in the Tampa Bay Derby.

Big Commerce will look to keep trainer Jose Francisco D’Angelo’s strong Tampa Bay Downs meet going Wednesday when he starts as part of an eight-horse field in a one-mile maiden special weight race on turf.

On Feb. 14, Big Commerce finished fourth, five lengths behind the Chad Brown-trained debut winner Going Concern, who was a neck better than the Tim Hamm-trained debut runner-up Legitimize. Though the turf was labeled firm for that race, D’Angelo felt it still had some give in it from rains that fell in the period leading up to that card.

Conquest Warrior received an 84 Beyer Speed Figure last out going the 1 1/8-mile distance of the upcoming Florida Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Although the reigning 2-year-old champion Fierceness and Holy Bull winner Hades are expected to be in the starting gate for the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby on March 30, the “wise guy” horse for many players coming into the race is Conquest Warrior. An up-and-coming member of the 3-year-old division, Conquest Warrior is trained by Shug McGaughey, who hopes the City of Light colt can follow in the footsteps of Orb, who parlayed his victory in the 2013 Florida Derby into a Kentucky Derby win five weeks later.

Thursday, J P Hellish should have ample pace in front of him when he seeks his 11th win in his 50th career start in another multi-conditioned allowance scheduled for 7 1/2 furlongs over the Gulfstream Park turf course. This $92,000 race goes as the last of nine on a card that begins at 1:10 p.m.

A field of nine has signed on for the $75,000 Welder on Tuesday at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla.

Lake Bee brings an ideal stalking style into the $75,000 Welder on Tuesday at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla.

The six-furlong race has drawn its fair share of speed horses, who could make for the kind of quick fractions that would set the race up for an off-the-pace runner like Lake Bee.

The Welder, which is named for the retired millionaire who is in the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame at Remington Park, is for 3-year-olds bred in Oklahoma. Welder was a multiple horse of the meet title winner at his home track of Will Rogers.
