Batten Down (left) works with Arthur's Ride at Saratoga on Monday. Batten Down will start next in either the Belmont Stakes or Ohio Derby.

Though they all won’t run, on Monday as many as 13 3-year-olds remained under consideration for the $2 million Belmont Stakes on June 8 at Saratoga.

Sierra Leone, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, looms the probable favorite in the race even if both Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Mystik Dan and Preakness winner Seize the Grey enter the race. While Seize the Grey is confirmed to start, a decision on whether Mystik Dan will run likely won’t be made until over the weekend after the horse works, trainer Kenny McPeek said Monday.

Extra Anejo returns, still trying to fulfill early promise

Bill Denver/Equi-Photo
Extra Anejo hasn’t raced since finishing fourth in the Haskell.

You won’t find too many dirt stakes these days with the depth and breadth of the featured seventh race Thursday at Churchill Downs. The race, for third-level allowance horses or $100,000 claimers, is carded for seven furlongs and drew 10 entrants. Among them are six stakes winners and two graded stakes winners. Two horses drop down from the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes, another from the Grade 2 Alysheba. This is what a $141,000 purse can get you.

All three are set to run in stakes this summer.

Lovingier co-owns each of the winners. All are by Stay Thirsty, who stands at Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch in Warner Springs, Calif.

Quester comes into Thursday's turf race off an April maiden win on Tapeta. His dam earned more than $200,000 on grass.

Can Dear Dad and Quester transfer their solid Tapeta form to turf? That is the key question handicappers will have to answer when trying to come up with the winner of Thursday’s $48,000 allowance and optional-claiming feature at Gulfstream Park. The race is restricted to Florida-breds and will be decided at one mile, weather permitting.

Dazzling Blue the class of Winning Colors, but at what price?

Coady Media
Dazzling Blue is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the Winning Colors.

Dazzling Blue should get the right trip Monday at Churchill Downs in the Grade 3, $250,000 Winning Colors Stakes. She probably won’t be the right price.

Drawn widest of 11 in this six-furlong dirt sprint for older fillies and mares, Dazzling Blue was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite. The 4-year-old filly rates a solid chance, but her favoritism would be linked as much as anything to the man training her.

Rainy forecast complicates Wonder Again Stakes

Sweet Rebecca wins the Memories of Silver at AQU April 28 2024
Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Sweet Rebecca has won both her career starts, including the Memories of Silver. She should be on or near the lead in the Wonder Again.

A field of six up-and-coming 3-year-old fillies is scheduled to decide Monday’s $200,000 Wonder Again at Aqueduct, although it may be the weather that proves the determining factor in a race that awards the top three finishers an automatic invitation to the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks on July 6.

Sexton Mile comes up tough, with top field, past winners

Touchuponastar wins the Evangeline Classic at EVD May 4 2024
Hodges Photography/Kimmy Burrow
Touchuponastar wins the Evangeline Classic on May 4. He will likely sit just off the pace in Monday's Steve Sexton Mile at Lone Star Park.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Tex. – Touchuponastar ran one of the most courageous races of his career last year when second to Frosted Grace in the Steve Sexton Mile at Lone Star Park.

Both horses return for Monday’s Grade 3, $400,000 renewal of the richest Thoroughbred race in Texas and Touchuponastar appears to have a few key variables in his favor for the rematch. But it’s much more than a rematch.
