Super Swift was meant to debut on the grass and was able to get the job done after the race was moved to the main track. He tries stakes company at Aqueduct in Friday’s $135,000 Atlantic Beach, a six-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds scheduled for the outer turf.
Super Swift came from third to land his Sept. 29 opener here in the slop against New York-bred maiden special opponents. He earned a 69 Beyer Speed Figure for covering the six furlongs in 1:11.68 under Irad Ortiz Jr.
DEL MAR, Calif. – There is a tradition in the Bregman family of grandfathers shepherding grandsons for afternoons at local racetracks.
Sam Bregman, the district attorney in Bernalillo County in New Mexico, used to attend the races in Maryland with his grandfather. Sam’s son, Alex, the star third baseman for the Houston Astros, recalls trips to the Downs at Albuquerque with his grandfather.
“Those are my earliest memories” of the racetrack, Alex Bregman said recently.
Officially, Joe Lee will be making his Breeders’ Cup debut when he runs May Day Ready in Friday’s $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar. Those who know Lee – a New York native who likes to call everybody “Cowboy” – understand this is hardly his first rodeo.
Lee, 62, has been involved in racing for more than four decades. From a hotwalker, to groom, to exercise rider, and wanna-be-jockey – he rode in one race – to assistant trainer, Lee has worked behind the scenes for most of his career.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – With the end of daylight saving time, the sun goes down early these days in horse country. But that’s okay, because some of the finest Thoroughbreds in the country will light up the night – and the bid board – on Monday evening.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – There’s something for everyone at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
There are racemares and broodmares to fit a number of programs – including Breeders’ Cup entrants and close relatives to runners. There are weanlings who will sell for every price point, to both end users and pinhookers. There are a handful of active stallions, who will most likely go to regional and international marketplaces.
DEL MAR, Calif. – In 2023 at Santa Anita, horses from overseas had their best Breeders’ Cup Friday, and at least partly owing to that barrage, 23 entered on Breeders’ Cup Friday this year.
Two-year-olds from Europe or Japan populate all five Friday races. If things broke really, really right, they could win them all.
A year ago, European horses swept the top three placings in the Juvenile Turf Sprint, went one-two in the Juvenile Turf, and had a close second in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Nine possible top three placings filled by six overseas horses.
DEL MAR, Calif. – Four days before the main event begins and all was relatively, and somewhat surprisingly, quiet during training hours Monday morning at Del Mar, despite the fact all the participants have now arrived on-site for the 2024 Breeders’ Cup.
Twenty years ago, Ghostzapper lived up to a family legacy when he bested one of the strongest Breeders’ Cup Classic fields assembled, leading home Roses In May – subsequent winner of the Dubai World Cup – by three lengths in a record-setting performance at Lone Star Park. Defending Classic and World Cup winner Pleasantly Perfect was third, and the also-rans in the field of 13 included 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri, Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, and dual classic winner and champion Funny Cide.
DEL MAR, Calif. – The last time jockey Rachel King rode in the United States she was winless in two races for amateur riders in Pennsylvania in 2011.
She returns for Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in much different circumstances.
King, 34, spent part of last winter riding in Japan, where she was closely allied with trainer Noriyuki Hori. The Hori-trained colt Satono Carnaval will be ridden for the first time by King in the BC Juvenile Turf.
In the stables at Del Mar on Monday, King described her brief stay in Japan as a “learning” experience.
