Is Virginia Sports Betting Legal?

Yes. Sports betting became legal in Virginia in April 2020 when lawmakers passed Senate Bill 384 and House Bill 896. The legislation authorized online wagering and established the Virginia Lottery as the regulatory authority responsible for licensing and oversight.

Online betting officially went live on January 21, 2021, and Virginia has operated as a mobile-first market ever since. Retail sportsbooks later opened inside newly built casinos as the state’s gaming expansion continued.

To legally place a wager in Virginia, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old

  • Be physically located within state lines at the time of the bet

  • Use a licensed sportsbook operator

Sportsbooks use geolocation software to confirm your physical location before allowing a wager. Even if you live in Virginia, you cannot place a bet unless you are physically inside the state at that moment.

The Virginia Lottery ensures that all licensed operators follow strict compliance standards, including consumer protections, responsible gambling resources, and financial safeguards.

How to Start Betting on Sports in Virginia

Getting started with legal sports betting in Virginia is straightforward, thanks to the state’s fully remote registration system and competitive mobile market. Whether you’re brand new to wagering or switching from another state, here’s a step-by-step breakdown to help you begin safely and confidently.

1. Choose a Legal Virginia Sportsbook

The first step is selecting a licensed Virginia sportsbook. The Virginia Lottery regulates all legal operators, so you’ll want to ensure you’re signing up with an approved platform.

When comparing sportsbooks, consider:

  • Welcome bonus value

  • Odds competitiveness

  • App performance and usability

  • Live betting features

  • Same Game Parlay tools

  • Customer support quality

  • Region-specific promotions

Some apps are stronger for live betting, while others excel in parlays, boosts, or rewards programs. Many experienced bettors maintain accounts with multiple sportsbooks to maximize value (more on that below).

2. Register Online (Remote Sign-Up Allowed)

Virginia allows fully remote account registration, meaning you can complete the entire process from your phone or computer.

You’ll typically need to provide:

  • Full legal name

  • Email address

  • Date of birth

  • Physical home address

  • Last four digits of your Social Security number

This information is used for identity verification, fraud prevention, and age confirmation. All bettors must be 21 years or older to legally wager in Virginia.

Sportsbooks also use geolocation software to confirm you are physically located within Virginia at the time of your bet. Even if you live in the state, you must be inside state lines to place a wager.

3. Claim a Welcome Bonus

Once registered, you can opt into a welcome promotion. Many sportsbooks require you to:

  • Click a “Claim Bonus” link

  • Enter a promo code (if required)

  • Or toggle a promotion before placing your first bet

Always read the full terms and conditions carefully. Pay close attention to:

  • Minimum qualifying bet amount

  • Minimum odds requirements

  • Bonus expiration window

  • Wagering restrictions

  • Settlement timing

Understanding the details helps you avoid missing out on bonus eligibility.

4. Deposit Funds

Virginia sportsbooks offer multiple secure deposit options. Most platforms support:

  • Credit cards

  • Debit cards

  • Online banking (ACH/eCheck)

  • PayPal

  • Venmo

  • Apple Pay

  • Play+ prepaid cards

ACH and e-wallets are often the most reliable and widely accepted options. Some banks may block gambling-related transactions on credit cards, so having a backup method is helpful.

Minimum deposits typically start at $5 or $10 depending on the operator.

5. Place Your First Bet

After funding your account, you’re ready to place your first wager.

If you’re using a Bet-and-Get promotion, for example, you might:

  • Bet $5 on an NFL team at eligible odds

  • Place a moneyline bet

  • Or wager on a game total (Over/Under)

For beginners, simpler bets like moneylines or totals are often easier to understand than complex parlays or props.

Many apps also offer:

  • Same Game Parlays

  • Player props

  • Futures bets

  • Live in-game betting

Take your time exploring the betting menu before placing larger wagers.

6. Withdraw Your Winnings

If your bet wins, you can withdraw through the same payment methods used for deposits.

Common Virginia withdrawal options include:

  • Online banking (ACH)

  • PayPal

  • Venmo

  • Play+

E-wallet withdrawals often process the fastest, sometimes within 24 hours. Bank transfers can take several business days depending on the sportsbook and financial institution.

Always check the cashier section inside the app for estimated processing times.

Benefits of Signing Up for Multiple Virginia Sportsbooks

Virginia’s competitive market allows bettors to open accounts at multiple legal operators - and doing so can provide several advantages.

1. Claim Multiple Welcome Bonuses

Each sportsbook offers its own sign-up promotion. By creating accounts at several platforms, you can stack bonuses and significantly boost your starting bankroll.

2. Shop for the Best Odds

Odds vary slightly between sportsbooks. Having multiple apps allows you to compare lines and select the most favorable price, which can increase long-term profitability.

3. Access Unique App Features

Different operators excel in different areas:

  • FanDuel: Best-in-class Same Game Parlay builder

  • bet365: Elite live betting

  • BetMGM: Rewards integration

  • DraftKings: Deep prop markets

Using multiple sportsbooks ensures you benefit from each platform’s strengths.

4. Take Advantage of Recurring Promotions

Sportsbooks regularly offer:

  • Odds boosts

  • Profit boosts

  • Insurance bets

  • Sport-specific promos

Having several accounts ensures you never miss the best offer available for a given game.

5. Backup During Technical Issues

If one sportsbook experiences technical problems during a major event, having accounts at other platforms gives you a reliable backup option.

Major Sporting Events in Virginia

Virginia’s sports culture combines historic traditions, regional rivalries, and national events, creating steady betting interest throughout the year.

NFL Season (Washington Commanders)

Although the Commanders play in nearby Maryland, Northern Virginia has a large and passionate fan base. NFL betting generates some of the highest wagering volume in the state, particularly during divisional matchups and primetime games.

Virginia Gold Cup (The Plains)

Held each May at Great Meadow, the Virginia Gold Cup is one of the state’s most historic sporting events. This prestigious steeplechase race blends horse racing with social tradition, drawing thousands of attendees annually.

Richmond Raceway NASCAR Weekends

Richmond Raceway hosts two major NASCAR Cup Series weekends each year - one in spring and one in fall. Its short-track layout and night racing atmosphere make it a favorite among motorsports bettors.

ACC College Football (UVA & Virginia Tech)

Virginia is home to two ACC programs:

  • University of Virginia Cavaliers

  • Virginia Tech Hokies

Their annual rivalry game, the Commonwealth Clash, consistently drives strong in-state betting interest.

Washington Nationals MLB Season

While based in Washington, D.C., the Nationals draw heavy support from Northern Virginia residents. MLB betting markets remain active throughout the 162-game season.

College Basketball (UVA & Virginia Tech)

Both programs attract consistent betting attention during conference play and March Madness. UVA’s national championship pedigree and Virginia Tech’s competitive ACC presence keep interest high.

Virginia Sports Betting Handle Explained

The betting handle represents the total amount of money wagered at legal sportsbooks over a given period.

Important distinctions:

  • Handle: Total money bet

  • Revenue: Handle minus payouts

  • Hold (Win Rate): Revenue divided by handle

Example:

If bettors wager $200 million and sportsbooks pay out $188 million:

  • Revenue = $12 million

  • Hold = 6%

Handle does not equal profit - it reflects total betting volume before payouts.

Virginia consistently reports hundreds of millions in monthly handle, reflecting the strength of its competitive mobile market.

Virginia Sports Betting Restrictions: What You Can’t Bet On

While Virginia operates one of the more accessible and competitive online sports betting markets in the United States, there are important restrictions that all bettors should understand before placing a wager. These regulations are designed to protect amateur athletes, preserve competitive integrity, and ensure that wagering remains limited to regulated sporting events.

Understanding what is not allowed is just as important as knowing what you can bet on.

🚫 No Betting on In-State College Teams

One of Virginia’s most significant restrictions involves in-state college programs.

Bettors cannot place wagers on Virginia-based college teams, including:

  • University of Virginia (UVA)

  • Virginia Tech

  • James Madison University

  • Old Dominion

  • Liberty University

  • Norfolk State

  • VCU

  • Other in-state institutions

This prohibition applies regardless of where the game is played. Even during nationally prominent events such as March Madness or bowl games, Virginia residents cannot bet on teams representing Virginia colleges.

This rule exists to reduce potential integrity concerns and protect student-athletes from external pressure.

🚫 No College Player Prop Bets

Virginia law also prohibits betting on individual college athlete performance markets. That means no wagering on:

  • Passing yards

  • Rebounds

  • Touchdowns

  • Points scored

  • Strikeouts

  • Any other individual statistical outcome for NCAA players

Even for out-of-state college teams, player props are off-limits. Bettors may still wager on game outcomes (spread, total, moneyline) for eligible college teams outside Virginia, but individual performance props are not allowed.

🚫 No High School Sports Betting

Wagering on high school athletic competitions is strictly prohibited.

This includes:

  • Football

  • Basketball

  • Baseball

  • Soccer

  • Track & field

  • Any other scholastic sporting event

Protecting minors and amateur athletes is a central component of Virginia’s regulatory framework.

🚫 No Political or Entertainment Betting

Virginia sports betting laws focus strictly on athletic competition. As a result, betting is not permitted on:

  • Political elections

  • Legislative outcomes

  • Academy Awards

  • Reality TV contests

  • Award shows

  • Entertainment events

  • Non-athletic novelty markets

While some international markets may offer these types of wagers, Virginia-licensed sportsbooks do not.

🚫 No Non-Regulated or Offshore Events

Virginia only permits wagering on regulated, recognized sporting events approved by the Virginia Lottery. This ensures proper oversight, official data integrity, and consumer protection.

What You Can Bet On

Despite these restrictions, Virginia bettors still have access to:

  • NFL

  • NBA

  • MLB

  • NHL

  • MLS

  • UFC/MMA

  • NASCAR

  • PGA Tour

  • International soccer

  • Out-of-state college sports (team-based markets only)

  • Olympic events (when approved)

The market remains robust and diverse, even with these guardrails in place.

Responsible Gaming in Virginia

Sports betting should always be an enjoyable form of entertainment - never a financial strategy or a source of stress. Virginia places strong emphasis on responsible gambling protections, and every licensed sportsbook offers tools designed to help users stay in control.

Most apps allow you to set:

  • Deposit limits

  • Daily or weekly wagering limits

  • Session time reminders

  • Cooling-off periods (temporary time-outs)

  • Self-exclusion programs

These tools are free and can be activated directly within your sportsbook account settings.

Florida Sports Betting

Sports betting is legal in Florida, but it is currently limited to Hard Rock Bet, the only authorized sportsbook operating in the state. Wagering was legalized in 2021 through a gaming compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe, granting the tribe exclusive rights to offer both retail and online sports betting statewide.

Because access to multiple traditional sportsbook apps is not available, many Florida residents explore legal alternatives such as Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) and pick’em platforms. These options are accessible statewide and often feature competitive welcome bonuses. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, DFS and pick’em sites allow users to win real money based on player performance outcomes rather than standard point spreads or moneyline wagers.

Is Online Sports Betting Legal in Florida?

Yes, online sports betting is legal in Florida — but only in a limited capacity. Currently, wagering is available exclusively through Hard Rock Bet, the sportsbook operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida under a tribal gaming compact approved in 2021.

The agreement was negotiated under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) and grants the Seminole Tribe exclusive rights to conduct sports wagering in the state. Under the terms of the compact, bets placed online are legally considered to occur on tribal land, as long as the betting servers processing those wagers are physically located on tribal property.

As a result, national sportsbook operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars are not authorized to offer online sports betting in Florida.

Due to this exclusivity structure, many Florida residents turn to alternative options like Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) platforms and pick’em contests. These services operate statewide and allow users to compete for real-money prizes based on player performance, rather than traditional sportsbook promos markets such as point spreads or moneylines.

Florida Sports Betting News & Legislative Timeline

📅 May 2018: The U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), allowing states to legalize sports betting individually. In Florida, lawmakers begin exploring sports wagering through tribal gaming agreements rather than a traditional commercial licensing model.

📅 April 2021: Governor Ron DeSantis signs a new gaming compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The agreement includes sports betting and grants the tribe exclusive rights to operate retail and online sportsbooks statewide.

📅 November 2021: Legal challenges pause the launch of online sports betting after a federal court ruling raises questions about the structure of the compact.

📅 2023–2024: Subsequent court decisions allow the Seminole Tribe to proceed under the compact framework, effectively reaffirming tribal exclusivity for sports wagering in Florida.

📅 Present: Hard Rock Bet remains the only authorized sportsbook operating in Florida. No legislation has been enacted to permit commercial sportsbook operators to enter the market.

What This Means for Florida Bettors

Because sports betting in Florida is governed through a tribal compact rather than a commercial licensing system, any major market expansion would likely require a renegotiated compact, voter approval, or significant legal action.

Florida Sports Betting Laws

Florida’s sports betting laws are structured around tribal gaming agreements, rather than a traditional state-run or commercial licensing model. Unlike many states that passed standalone sports betting legislation, Florida legalized wagering through a state–tribal compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Under current law, the Seminole Tribe holds exclusive authority to offer sports betting in the state. Florida has not enacted legislation permitting multiple sportsbook operators or creating a competitive online betting marketplace. As a result, sports wagering access is limited to tribal operations, including approved retail casino locations and the tribe’s online platform.

Although the 2018 repeal of PASPA allowed states to legalize sports betting individually, Florida chose a tribal exclusivity framework rather than a commercial model. This decision continues to shape the state’s limited sportsbook landscape.

Recent Florida Sports Betting Agreements & Legal Developments

Below is a timeline of key agreements and legal actions that have defined Florida’s sports betting framework:

  • Seminole Gaming Compact (2021): Legalized sports betting under a tribal compact and granted the Seminole Tribe exclusive operating rights statewide.

  • Federal Court Challenge (2021): A federal ruling temporarily halted online sports betting, citing concerns regarding wagers placed outside tribal land.

  • Appellate Court Decisions (2023): Higher court rulings allowed the compact structure to proceed, reaffirming the legal foundation for tribal exclusivity.

  • Hard Rock Bet Relaunch (2023): Online sports betting resumed under Seminole Tribe control.

  • No Commercial Sports Betting Legislation: Florida lawmakers have not passed bills authorizing non-tribal or commercial sportsbook operators.

What Betting Options Are Legal in Florida Right Now?

Florida currently offers a limited range of legal betting and gambling options. Traditional sports betting and slot-like games based on the results of past auto races are permitted exclusively through Hard Rock Bet, the online sportsbook operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida under its state gaming compact. At this time, national sportsbook apps such as FanDuel, DraftKings Sportsbook, BetMGM, and Caesars are not authorized to offer standard sports wagering in the state.

However, Florida residents still have access to several other legal gaming alternatives. These include Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) contests, pick’em-style platforms, the Florida Lottery, pari-mutuel wagering (such as horse racing), and gaming at approved tribal casino locations.

Below is a breakdown of the currently permitted options and how each operates under Florida law.

Florida Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) and Pick’em Apps

Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) remains one of the most accessible and widely used legal sports gaming options in Florida. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, DFS contests center on individual player performance, rather than predicting game winners, point spreads, or totals.

Florida does not currently have legislation that specifically licenses or formally regulates DFS platforms. As a result, major DFS and pick’em operators have continued to offer contests statewide for years without significant enforcement action. While availability can vary by operator and contest format, Florida users generally have access to many of the same DFS platforms available in other states.

Common DFS Contest Types Available in Florida

  • 50/50 Contests: Approximately half of the participants win and half lose. These lower-variance contests typically pay close to double the entry fee to winners.

  • Head-to-Head (H2H): One user competes against a single opponent. The lineup with the higher fantasy score wins the prize pool.

  • Tournaments (GPPs): Large-field contests with significant prize pools. Only a small percentage of entries cash, but payouts can be substantially higher.

  • Pick’em Contests: Users select multiple player stat projections and choose whether each outcome will go over or under the listed line.

  • Best Ball: Participants draft a roster once, and the platform automatically counts the highest-scoring players each week or round — no weekly lineup adjustments required.

Florida Lottery

The Florida Lottery is one of the most widely used forms of state-regulated gambling. Residents can purchase lottery tickets in person at authorized retailers across the state, including convenience stores and supermarkets.

The official Florida Lottery mobile app allows users to check winning numbers, scan tickets, and locate nearby retailers. However, lottery tickets must still be purchased in person, as online ticket sales are not currently permitted under Florida law.

Florida Horse Racing & Pari-Mutuel Betting

Florida permits pari-mutuel wagering at licensed facilities. This includes betting on horse racing, jai alai, and other approved events at authorized venues. Some locations also provide simulcast wagering, allowing bettors to place wagers on races held in other states.

All pari-mutuel bets must be placed through approved operators and licensed facilities, either on-site or through authorized betting platforms connected to those locations.

Are Casinos Legal in Florida?

Florida does not permit commercial casinos like those found in Nevada or New Jersey. Instead, casino gaming operates under federal tribal gaming law.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida operates multiple casino properties statewide. These venues offer slot machines, table games, poker rooms, and retail sportsbook access. Sports wagering at tribal casinos is conducted exclusively through the Hard Rock Bet platform, under the tribe’s gaming authority.

Most Popular Sports and Teams to Bet On in Florida

Florida is home to one of the most active sports markets in the United States. With professional franchises across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS, along with a powerhouse college football presence, fan engagement remains strong year-round. Even under the state’s limited sportsbook structure, interest in sports wagering continues through Hard Rock Bet and Daily Fantasy Sports platforms.

NFL Betting in Florida

Football is the most popular sport to bet on in Florida. The state features three NFL franchises, each with a loyal and established fan base.

The Miami Dolphins command the largest national following and consistently generate heavy betting interest, particularly during playoff races and prime-time matchups. South Florida is widely regarded as one of the league’s most active viewing and wagering markets.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers experienced a surge in betting activity during the Tom Brady era and continue to draw attention as competitive playoff contenders. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars have emerged as a rising AFC team, with growing betting engagement as their roster strengthens.

Because the NFL drives the highest weekly betting volume nationwide, these teams collectively account for the most consistent wagering activity in Florida throughout the season.

For more information, see our guide to the best NFL betting apps.

NBA Betting in Florida

Basketball generates steady betting interest across Florida’s two NBA franchises.

The Miami Heat are one of the league’s most recognizable teams, with multiple NBA Finals appearances and a strong national following. Deep playoff runs typically lead to spikes in wagering activity, particularly on futures, series prices, and player props.

The Orlando Magic maintain strong regional support. During rebuilding phases featuring emerging young talent, betting interest often centers on player props, season win totals, and developmental futures markets.

MLB Betting in Florida

Baseball remains a popular wagering option thanks to its long regular season and near-daily schedule.

The Tampa Bay Rays frequently contend for postseason spots and are known for their analytics-driven approach. Value-focused bettors often gravitate toward the Rays due to disciplined roster management and strategic pitching usage.

The Miami Marlins draw regional support, especially during divisional matchups within the NL East. Because MLB games are played almost daily during the summer, baseball becomes one of the most active betting markets throughout the season.

College Sports Betting in Florida

College football is deeply ingrained in Florida’s sports culture and, in many regions, rivals the NFL in overall fan engagement.

Programs such as the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, and Miami Hurricanes command national recognition and passionate followings. Rivalry games, conference championships, and bowl season typically generate the highest levels of betting interest each year.

College basketball also sees increased activity during conference tournaments and March postseason play, particularly when Florida programs make tournament runs.

Florida Responsible Gaming Resources

Whether wagering through Hard Rock Bet, participating in Daily Fantasy Sports, or entering pick’em contests, responsible play is essential. Sports betting and gaming should always be treated as entertainment — not as a guaranteed way to earn income.

  • Hard Rock Sportsbook shutters operations

    December, 2021

A little more than a month into accepting sports wagers, the Seminoles halt betting on Hard Rock Sportsbook after a court ruling temporarily invalidates the tribe's compact with the state.

The U.S. Supreme Court denies West Flagler's request for judicial review, and sports betting is once again declared legal in Florida.

Weeks after an early November mobile launch for existing account holders, all Floridians of legal age are able to wager on the Hard Rock Bet platform.

  • The Seminoles settle with West Flagler

    October, 2024

The years-long legal saga involving the Seminoles and West Flagler & Associates ends in a settlement. In exchange for West Flagler agreeing to halt all further legal proceedings against the tribe, the Seminoles will offer wagering on jai alai events associated with West Flagler.

FanDuel New York

Best known for: The easiest Same Game Parlay (SGP) builder in the industry, SGP+, fast betslip calculations, and frequent odds boosts.

Alongside DraftKings, FanDuel consistently ranks at or near the top in handle and revenue, making it a true national heavyweight.

One of FanDuel’s biggest strengths is its Same Game Parlay technology. The SGP builder is intuitive, fast, and visually clean, making it simple to combine spreads, totals, and player props into one wager. The app shows instant payout updates as you build your bet, which makes price comparison and risk evaluation seamless.

All Legal New York Sportsbooks

New York’s online sports betting market currently features nine fully licensed and regulated mobile operators. Each sportsbook is approved by the New York State Gaming Commission and authorized to accept wagers from bettors who are 21 or older and physically located within state lines.

Here are the legal online sportsbooks operating in New York:

  • BetMGM

  • FanDuel

  • DraftKings

  • Caesars Sportsbook

  • Fanatics Sportsbook

  • BetRivers

  • Bally Bet

  • theScore Bet (formerly ESPN Bet)

  • Resorts World Bet

Each of these operators offers statewide mobile wagering, secure payment processing, and regulated betting markets. While all are licensed, their strengths vary — some excel in live betting, others in Same Game Parlays, and some in loyalty rewards or frequent odds boosts. Choosing the right app often comes down to your betting style and which promotions fit your strategy.

How We Rank the Best NY Sports Betting Apps

With nine sportsbooks competing in one of the most heavily regulated and highly taxed markets in the country, not all apps deliver the same overall value. To determine which sportsbooks truly stand out in New York, we apply a consistent, data-driven evaluation process based on the following criteria:

Odds Competitiveness

We track how frequently each sportsbook offers the most favorable lines compared to competitors. Even small pricing differences  - such as -110 vs. -115 - can significantly impact long-term profitability. Over time, consistently getting better odds can make a measurable difference in a bettor’s bottom line.

Bonus Offers & Ongoing Promotions

Welcome offers are important, but long-term value matters just as much. We assess:

  • Upfront bonus value

  • Ease of qualifying

  • Expiration timelines

  • Ongoing boosts, insurance promos, and loyalty perks

In New York’s 51% tax environment, promotional creativity is limited compared to other states, so the quality and frequency of ongoing promos are especially important.

Market Depth & Variety

We examine the full betting menu, including:

  • Major U.S. leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL)

  • College sports (within NY restrictions)

  • International leagues

  • Niche sports and special markets

  • Alternate spreads, totals, and props

A deeper menu provides more flexibility, especially for parlay builders and live bettors.

User Experience & Mobile App Performance

A sportsbook app must be fast, stable, and easy to navigate. We evaluate:

  • Speed of bet placement

  • Stability during high-traffic events

  • Ease of navigating between markets

  • Clarity of betslip calculations

  • Overall visual design

In fast-moving live betting environments, app responsiveness can directly impact wager execution.

Banking Options & Payout Speed

We assess:

  • Number of supported deposit methods

  • Withdrawal flexibility

  • Processing times

  • Transparency in cashier operations

Fast payouts and reliable banking options are critical to a positive user experience.

Live Betting Features

Live wagering is one of the fastest-growing segments in sports betting. We analyze:

  • Speed of in-play odds updates

  • Availability of live streaming (where offered)

  • Access to real-time statistics

  • Depth of in-game prop markets

Some sportsbooks excel at live betting while others lag behind - this is a key differentiator.

Customer Support

Responsive customer service builds trust. We evaluate:

  • Live chat availability

  • Phone support access

  • Email response times

  • Clarity of help center resources

Strong support is especially important during high-volume events or payout disputes.

Best NY Sportsbook Promos & Welcome Offers  2026

Despite New York’s high tax structure, new users can still unlock approximately $350+ in upfront promotional value across top sportsbooks.

A smart strategy is to:

  1. Claim welcome offers first

  2. Use a quick-settling qualifying wager

  3. Read terms carefully (minimum odds, expiration timelines)

  4. Rotate apps to compare boosts and live markets

Once bonuses are unlocked, you can decide which sportsbook best fits your preferred betting style - whether that’s live betting, Same Game Parlays, player props, or futures.

Major Sporting Events in New York

New York’s sports calendar is one of the busiest and most diverse in the world. From Grand Slam tennis and Triple Crown horse racing to historic baseball rivalries and global soccer championships, the Empire State hosts events that draw international audiences and massive betting interest year-round.

Whether you’re a casual fan or an experienced bettor, New York provides no shortage of headline moments across nearly every major sport.

US Open Tennis Championships (Flushing Meadows, Queens)

Held annually in late August and early September at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the US Open is one of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments. It is the final major of the calendar year and regularly features the biggest names in the sport competing under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

From a betting perspective, the US Open generates enormous volume across:

  • Match moneylines

  • Set totals

  • Game spreads

  • Live in-play markets

  • Tournament futures

Because tennis is played nearly every day during the two-week event, sportsbooks offer constant betting opportunities. Live betting is especially popular, as momentum can shift quickly during matches.

Belmont Stakes (Elmont, Long Island)

The Belmont Stakes is the third and final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown, traditionally held in early June at Belmont Park. Known as “The Test of the Champion,” the race covers a grueling 1½ miles and has produced some of the most memorable moments in racing history.

Betting activity spikes significantly when a horse enters the Belmont with a chance to complete the Triple Crown. Even in non-Triple Crown years, the race attracts:

  • Win, place, and show wagers

  • Exactas, trifectas, and superfectas

  • Futures and prop-style racing bets

It remains one of the most prestigious and heavily wagered racing events in North America.

New York Knicks & Brooklyn Nets NBA Seasons (New York City)

Basketball is deeply embedded in New York’s identity. The Knicks at Madison Square Garden and the Nets at Barclays Center provide nearly nightly betting opportunities from October through the NBA playoffs.

High-profile rivalry games and postseason matchups often drive strong wagering activity across:

  • Point spreads

  • Totals (Over/Under)

  • Player props

  • Same Game Parlays

  • Championship futures

The Knicks’ historical significance and the Nets’ modern offensive pace both create steady NBA betting volume throughout the season.

MLB Subway Series (New York City)

Few rivalries in sports match the intensity of Yankees vs. Mets. When the two teams meet in the Subway Series, the city buzzes - and sportsbooks see a spike in betting handle.

These matchups typically drive heavy action on:

  • Moneylines

  • Run lines

  • Game totals

  • Player home run props

  • Series markets

Because both teams have large, passionate fan bases, public betting volume often surges during these games.

PGA Tour & Major Golf Championships (Various Locations)

New York regularly hosts PGA Tour stops and major championships at legendary venues such as:

  • Bethpage Black

  • Oak Hill Country Club

  • Winged Foot

Golf betting has grown substantially in recent years, with strong interest in:

  • Outright winner futures

  • Top-10 and Top-20 finishes

  • Round-by-round matchups

  • Live leaderboard betting

When New York hosts a major championship, betting interest rises nationally and internationally.

Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest (Coney Island)

Held every Fourth of July at Coney Island, this unique competition blends spectacle with competitive eating tradition. While it is not a traditional sporting event, novelty betting markets sometimes appear for:

  • Total hot dogs consumed

  • Winner markets

  • Head-to-head props

It has become a pop-culture staple that draws national attention each summer.

2026 World Cup Final (New York/New Jersey Region)

MetLife Stadium will host the FIFA World Cup Final in 2026, marking one of the largest global sporting events ever held in the region. This event is expected to generate enormous betting volume across:

  • Match outcomes

  • Player props

  • Goal totals

  • Tournament futures

Soccer betting has expanded rapidly in the United States, and this event is likely to produce record-breaking wagering activity.

New York Sports Betting Handle

The betting handle represents the total amount of money wagered with legal sportsbooks during a given time period. It includes every dollar staked before payouts are distributed.

It is important to understand that handle is not the same as revenue.

  • Handle = Total amount wagered

  • Revenue = Handle minus payouts

  • Hold percentage (win rate) = Revenue divided by handle

Example:

If bettors place $200 million in wagers and sportsbooks pay out $188 million in winnings:

  • Revenue = $12 million

  • Hold = 6%

New York consistently ranks among the highest-handle sports betting markets in the United States, due to its large population and strong sports culture.

FAQs

Is sports betting legal in New York?

Yes. Retail sports betting launched at various casinos statewide on July 16, 2019, while the online variety went live on January 8, 2022, and has since expanded to include nine mobile operators.

Who can bet on sports in New York?

Anyone who is 21 and over and is physically located within New York's state boundaries can typically bet on sports in the Empire State. Among the exceptions are people who have voluntarily placed themselves on self-exclusion lists for a set period of time in order to take a break from gambling. Those who wish to bet on a mobile sports betting platform must first sign up for an account and deposit money with an online sportsbook that has been licensed in New York.

Who regulates sports betting in New York?

The New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) is the sole sports betting regulator in the state.

What can I bet on in New York?

The NYSGC exclusively determines which sporting events can be bet on in New York. Among the events New York sportsbooks are permitted to offer wagering on in some capacity are auto racing, baseball, basketball, boxing, cornhole, cycling, darts, fighting, golf, hockey, lacrosse, rugby, snooker, soccer, softball, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball.

What can't I bet on in New York?

New York sports bettors cannot wager on events involving in-state colleges regardless of where the competition takes place. If there is a collegiate tournament being played in New York that involves no schools from New York, wagering is legal.

The NYSGC disallows futures bets on the outcome of subjective votes, such as the Heisman Trophy and Cy Young Award. The same prohibition applies to award shows  like the Oscars and Grammys. Furthermore, the NYSGC does not allow any prop bets on collegiate athletes, regardless of what school they hail from, and prohibits wagers with negative implications, like betting on the amount of missed field goals in a football game or double faults in tennis.

Is DFS legal in New York?

After a long and winding legal road, DFS (daily fantasy sports) is fully legal in New York. However, fantasy sports operators like DraftKings and FanDuel – which, coincidentally, also operate sportsbooks – are not allowed to run fantasy contests that closely mirror prop bets.

Is it legal to bet on horse racing in New York?
