Mi Hermano Ramon has group of graded stakes winners to deal with in Kilroe Mile

Debra A. Roma
After a trip to Florida for the Pegasus World Cup Turf, Mi Hermano Ramon returns to California for Saturday's Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita.

By early February, two weeks after he finished fourth in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational at Gulfstream Park, Mi Hermano Ramon was back in California and showing enthusiasm in day-to-day training.

That was what trainer Mark Glatt needed to see to begin planning a start in Saturday’s Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf at Santa Anita.

“In the second week of getting back from Florida, he started acting like his old self,” Glatt recalled Thursday. “His breezes were on par with where he is at when he’s right.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – It’s crunch time for a half-dozen Kentucky Derby candidates entered in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita.

“From here on out, it’s like the playoffs,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “That’s what makes the road to the Derby so interesting. Everybody’s watching, everybody’s got an opinion. It’s like watching the playoffs in baseball or football.”

Quick turnaround the best path to Ashland for La Cara

Tom Keyser
La Cara made a smashing 3-year-old debut in winning the Suncoast Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 8.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The expected top two betting choices in Saturday’s Grade 2, $215,000 Davona Dale Stakes at Gulfstream Park appear to have some vulnerabilities. La Cara comes back in three weeks, while Ballerina d’Oro makes her first start in 12 weeks and missed a race due to a fever. But it remains to be seen if any of the other five 3-year-old fillies can take advantage in the one-mile race.

An inexperienced Gotham field boasts betting intrigue

Joe Labozzetta/NYRA
Sacrosanct went 4 for 4 as a 2-year-old, with three restricted stakes victories.

Viewed through the prism of a Kentucky Derby prep, Saturday’s Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham Stakes comes up lacking. Viewed through the prism of a gambling exercise, the Gotham comes up rather intriguing.

Eight of the 10 entrants come into the race off wins, many in restricted races. None of the 10 have an open-company stakes win on their résumé, and only one has even competed in such a race.
