Sweet Azteca returns from a last-place finish in the Chillingworth in October in Sunday's Desert Stormer at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Despite finishing last as the odds-on favorite in her most recent start eight months ago, Sweet Azteca returns with an air of invincibility on Sunday at Santa Anita.

Charlene's Dream aims to take big swig in Mint Julep

Debra A. Roma
Charlene’s Dream won three of four starts as a 2-year-old in 2023 at Golden Gate, including stakes on turf and synthetic.

It was a long time between drinks for Charlene’s Dream when she returned from an eight-month layoff to win the Grade 3 Gallorette on the Preakness Stakes undercard. She goes back for another round quickly this time in the Grade 3, $250,000 Mint Julep Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the turf Sunday at Churchill Downs.

NBA Betting Handle Down as Sportsbooks Target High-Hold Markets

Even the thrills of the NBA playoffs haven’t managed to whet the appetite of sports bettors.

Gaming research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming found that the NBA’s total betting handle decreased about 10% year-over-year, according to data from online sportsbooks in Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, and Oregon.

Despite the waning interest, revenue was slightly up 1% during the same time.

Mechaya galloped out well after a third-place finish in the Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs.

World Record in the Aristides and World Beater in the Audubon, two of five Churchill stakes Saturday, just missed the cut for this Weekend GamePlan. I like both horses well enough but found three better options.

No added pressure for Mott, Sovereignty after skipping Preakness

Barbara D. Livingston
Bill Mott said he never seriously considered entering Sovereignty in the Preakness.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Bill Mott said the decision to skip the Preakness with Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty doesn’t put any more pressure on him to win the Belmont Stakes than otherwise already exists.

“It would be the same,” Mott said Thursday morning outside his Saratoga barn. “I feel the normal pressure of wanting to win and just the pressure of keeping him out of trouble and keep him sound and hope he stays sound.”

Dream On to run on turf or dirt in Jersey Derby

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Dream On, winner of the Woodhaven at Aqueduct last out, headlines Saturday's Jersey Derby at Monmouth and will still run if the race comes off the turf.

The $100,000 Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park on Saturday may be one of many turf stakes impacted by rainfall in the Northeast this weekend. Trainer Mark Casse and 3-year-old colt Dream On remain undaunted.

Coming off a fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last year, Dream On returned in January and has since won two of three starts. The Jersey Derby will be his fifth race at a mile.

“Honestly, when we went to the Breeders’ Cup, I thought he was one of our best chances,” Casse said. “He ran well in the Breeders’ Cup, they just caught him late.”

R Disaster the one to beat in Rehoboth Stakes

Adam Coglianese/Coglianese Photos
R Disaster will ship to Delaware Park for Saturday's $100,000 Rehoboth Stakes.

With several New York shippers bowing out of the $100,000 Rehoboth Stakes at Delaware Park on Saturday, R Disaster, a 4-year-old filly trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., will likely become an overwhelming presence in a shorter field.

“She’s in good form,” Joseph said. “Has worked well since [the Grade 3 Vagrancy]. Goes there the deserving favorite.”

Rhode Island Sports Betting

Rhode Island was one of the first states to legalize sports betting, but the smallest state by surface area has contented itself with an equally modest, lottery-controlled sports betting market, with just one mobile operator and two retail sportsbooks.

About Sports Betting in Rhode Island

A mere month after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), Rhode Island passed a budget that legalized retail sports betting in the state. The following year, 2019, mobile wagering came to the smallest state in terms of surface area.

Small would also be an apt description of Rhode Island's sports betting market, which is entirely controlled by the state lottery and features just one mobile sports betting platform, Sportsbook Rhode Island, and two retail sportsbooks at Bally's casinos. Legislation to expand the marketplace to five online operators was put forth in 2025 but had yet to pass by June of that year.

For a state of a little over a million people, Rhode Island's record monthly handle of $62.3 million, achieved in January 2023, is plenty respectable, but one wonders what the future might hold.

Barbara D. Livingston
After falling a neck short in the Churchill Downs Stakes, Nysos returns in Saturday's Triple Bend at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Nysos is no longer perfect, but he is formidable.

Four weeks after the first defeat of his career, a runner-up finish on a sloppy track in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes, Nysos resumes his march to prominence Saturday at Santa Anita.

Nysos faces four rivals in the Grade 3 Triple Bend, a seven-furlong sprint that also marks the return of Grade 2 winner Dr. Venkman. Others entered are 2023 Triple Bend winner Spirit of Makena, improving 3-year-old Smooth Cruisein, and likely pacesetter Vlahos.
