D. J. Stable has multiple rooting interests in Debutante

Benoit Photo
Light Won Up wins her debut going 4 1/2 furlongs on May 16 at Santa Anita, earning a 78 Beyer Speed Figure.

The Green family’s D. J. Stable has plenty of rooting interests in the $225,000 Debutante for 2-year-old fillies on Sunday at Churchill Downs.

D. J. Stable co-owns Americathegreat, a well-bred maiden who figures to take a step forward with added distance in her second start. But D. J. Stable also co-bred and sold Light Won Up and is still involved with the dam of the filly who ships in from California with the top Beyer Speed Figure in this field.

Markle has Veritas Aequitas peaking at the right time

Reed Palmer/Emerald Downs
Veritas Aequitas looks like the top choice in Sunday's feature at Emerald Downs.

The 4-year-old gelding Veritas Aequitas – Latin for “truth and justice” – started his career inauspiciously in August of 2023 with a sixth-place finish at Del Mar, for which he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 21. That figure improved to 74 by the end of an 11-race 2024 campaign and reached a new apex of 76 in a come-from-behind, 1 1/4-length win over a mile at Emerald Downs on June 1 with veteran jockey Frank Alvarado in the irons.

O'Brien primed for another Derby double

Barbara D. Livingston
Aidan O'Brien has won the English and Irish derbies with the same horse five times, and has won the Irish Derby a remarkable 16 times.

In the history of the Group 1 Irish Derby, 19 winners also won the Group 1 English Derby at Epsom Racecourse.

On Sunday, Lambourn will be an odds-on favorite to become the 20th to reach the milestone and give legendary trainer Aidan O’Brien his sixth Epsom-Irish double. He has won the Irish Derby a remarkable 16 times.

Lambourn will have familiar company. Lazy Griff and Tennessee Stud, second and third in the English Derby on June 7, are part of a field of 10 in the $1.46 million Irish Derby, run at 1 1/2 miles at The Curragh.

Pair of Canada Day stakes have familiar casts

Four Footed Fotos
August Rain will look to rebound in Tuesday's $50,000 Lieutenant Governor’s at Hastings.

Canada Day, which falls annually on July 1, is a special day up north. But for ardent Hastings Racecourse observers, this Canada Day will feel a lot like June 7.

As will be the case on July 1, Hastings played host to two stakes, the Emerald Downs and the George Royal, on June 7. While the July 1 handicaps, the Monashee and Lieutenant Governor’s will be contested at 1 1/16 miles, the June 7 contests were run at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Ross-trained duo have complementary running styles

The $500,000 Woodbine Oaks will be held July 20.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Junior Hot Shot has landed in an appropriate spot in Sunday’s Woodbine feature, a conditioned allowance with a $50,000 claiming option. He’s one of two John Ross-trained 4-year-olds by Souper Speedy in the six-furlong Tapeta sprint, along with Its Time to Shine.

Junior Hot Shot is a five-time winner from 12 starts who won two restricted stakes last year. He prevailed in the front-end battle and the war when clearing the first open allowance condition with a career-best 84 Beyer Speed Figure in his April 27 season debut.

Weekend GamePlan: Picks for Stephen Foster, Fleur de Lis, Dominion Day

Barbara D. Livingston
Mindframe is stretching out from seven furlongs to 1 1/8 miles in the Stephen Foster and should be forwardly placed throughout.

Churchill’s spring meet goes out with a bang this weekend, and Saturday’s card includes appearances by last year’s 3-year-old male and 3-year-old filly champions. I’m trying to take both down.

Stephen Foster

Mindframe’s a gorgeous horse. He was advanced physically as a 3-year-old, has a long, beautiful stride. What held him back last summer was his brain, not his body. Keeping that in mind, and if, as seems to be the case, Mindframe has his head in the game this year, he could be the value in the Foster, thanks to the presence of champion Sierra Leone.

Komorebino Omoide makes rare turf start in Texas Turf Classic

Komorebino Omoide makes just second turf start in Saturday's Texas Turf Classic at Lone Star Park.

Komorebino Omoide will make a rare appearance on turf Saturday in the $250,000 Texas Turf Classic, one of four open-company stakes making up the annual Summer Turf Festival at Lone Star Park. The card also includes a pair of turf sprints, each worth $125,000.

The track’s signal will be limited to tracks in Texas and international sites due to an ongoing impasse between the Texas Racing Commission and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.

Thorpedo Anna at crossroads in Fleur de Lis Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Looking to rebound from her La Troienne loss, Thorpedo Anna is the 3-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday's Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs.

In her first dozen races, Thorpedo Anna never finished worse than second. Her 10 wins included Grade 1 victories in the Kentucky Oaks, the Acorn, the Coaching Club American Oaks, the Cotillion, and, to cap her season, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, where she beat older horses in her first try. Her lone defeat as a 3-year-old probably produced the best race she’s ever run, Thorpedo Anna finished second by a nose to the elite colt Fierceness in the Travers Stakes.
