On form, not much appears to separate the 3-year-old filly Whirl and the 4-year-old filly See The Fire. What does separate them Thursday at Goodwood Racecourse in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes is weight.
Dazzle d’Oro, a first-out maiden winner at Churchill Downs, suffered a catastrophic injury at the conclusion of a workout Monday morning over the main track at Saratoga in preparation for a start in the Grade 2, $200,000 Saratoga Special.
According to trainer Tom Amoss, Dazzle d’Oro suffered a fractured sesamoid in his left foreleg and was euthanized after being taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – On his cell phone, underneath his alarm, jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has three emojis: a trophy, a goat, and prayer hands. It is a daily reminder of the motivating force behind all the work Ortiz does each day – another Eclipse Award.
Though Ortiz has won five Eclipse Awards as North America’s champion jockey – he was unseated last year by Flavien Prat – he wants more.
DEL MAR, Calif. – Om N Joy is likely to start in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Del Mar on Aug. 30 after extending her winning streak to four races with her third consecutive stakes win in Friday’s $152,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for statebreds.
“I think the Torrey Pines would be a good place to jump into open company,” trainer Aggie Ordonez said on Monday.
“I know it’s a big step up. I feel like she’s doing well enough here and the timing is just right. It gives her five weeks.”
DEL MAR, Calif. – Lovesick Blues earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 1 with his late rally in Saturday’s Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar – with one caveat.
Lovesick Blues must be supplemented to the Breeders’ Cup program for $100,000 when pre-entries are due on Oct. 20.
It’s an investment owner and trainer Librado Barocio is preparing to make as of Sunday.
Field of Gold won his 3-year-old debut April 16 as the most tepid of favorites in the Group 3 Craven Stakes. Three months later, the betting markets say it’s not a question of whether Field of Gold wins the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on Wednesday at Goodwood, but by how many lengths.
There are stallions who toil in obscurity, and there there’s a stud in Indiana named Bhajatty. Bred in 2017 by Shadwell Farm, the son of Carpe Diem never raced. Daily Racing Form’s database doesn’t even contain a record of his sire and dam. Bhajatty went to stud in 2020, stands at the Indiana Stallion Station, and has sired four named foals. That’s right, four. Three have raced, and the two that have won somehow – a million-to-one chance – both start in rich stakes races Wednesday at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
A New Jersey lawmaker on Friday introduced a bill that would ban sportsbooks from offering micro-betting, or fast-paced wagers involving events within a game.
Assemblyman Dan Hutchison (D-4) submitted the proposal, which would prevent consumers from betting on markets such as whether the next pitch will be a ball or a strike, or whether the next pass will be complete or incomplete. The bill is one of several aimed at reforming New Jersey’s gambling industry.
DEL MAR, Calif. – An English grass mare on her way up the ladder and a Cal-bred gelding on his way out of town are prominent Thursday at Del Mar, but both contenders are up against it.
The grass mare Hopeful faces a tough task in race 7, a second-level allowance. It is never easy to win back-to-back while moving up in class on turf. Then again, not many European imports deliver a U.S. debut as impressive as Hopeful.
