Undefeated Laurelin goes for first Grade 1 in Queen Elizabeth II; pick six carryover now $408K

Barbara D. Livingston
Undefeated Laurelin blitzed the Saratoga Oaks Invitational, winning by 1 3/4 lengths.

From her New York turf-route maiden debut in October through a Saratoga stakes in August, the script hasn’t changed: The 3-year-old filly Laurelin races, the 3-year-old filly Laurelin wins.

Laurelin’s Beyer Speed Figures have improved every start and, stepped up to Grade 2 competition from listed stakes, she blitzed the Saratoga Oaks Invitational, running straight as a string to win by 1 3/4 lengths.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a horse start out 5 for 5,” said trainer Graham Motion.

Ascot Graduation will test stamina of the top local juveniles

Patti Tubbs
Trainer Dino Condilenios said the filly Karensnotimpressed "just keeps getting better."

When Hastings announced its 2025 stakes schedule, the idea was to have four sets of gender-restricted stakes for 2-year-olds during the meet. Only twice have things gone according to plan.

On Aug. 4, the BC Nursery and BC Debutante were combined into a single 6 1/2-furlong Nursery when the Debutante failed to attract enough female nominees. On Aug. 25, the genders were separated in a pair of CTHS Sales Stakes run at the same distance.

Seven last-out winners meet in starter allowance

Zo Zucchera comes into Friday's Gulfstream feature on a two-race winning streak. She was claimed out of her last start by Jose D'Angelo.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Seven horses coming off victories in their most recent starts at various class levels will meet up under the same roof in a mid-priced starter allowance on Friday at Gulfstream Park.

The headliner is carded for fillies and mares at one mile on turf, although, with rain earlier in the week and more in the forecast, there is a chance the race could end up being switched to a mile and 70 yards over the Tapeta strip.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: With Tamara back in a big way, Mandella mulls splitting sprinters

Benoit Photo
After a layoff of nearly 11 months, Tamara earned a commanding 3 3/4-length victory in the Grade 3 Chillingworth at Santa Anita.

Richard Mandella’s chances in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint grew even stronger last weekend, leading him back to the drawing board as the championship event draws closer. The trainer has been preparing Kopion, the likely favorite, for the race since August, but with Tamara back in the fold, he said that he will cross-enter Kopion in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint to give himself the option of splitting the contenders.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Full Serrano's connections hope for déjà vu

Debra A. Roma
Full Serrano won the 2024 Dirt Mile with a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 104.

Full Serrano will attempt to join Goldencents and Cody’s Wish in the history books as a two-time winner of the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. He’s coming up to the race as well as he did when he won the 2024 edition with a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 104.

“I think he’s right where he was last year,” said John Sadler, who trains Full Serrano for Hronis Racing. “I don’t see any drop-off on him. He’s in good shape and strong.”

England: O'Brien, Gosdens try to break tie in Fillies' Mile

Goodwood Racecourse
Precise, winner of the Group 3 Prestige at Goodwood, is one of the top choices for Friday's Fillies' Mile at Newmarket.

The 2-year-old filly Precise, favored in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile on Friday at Newmarket, is already a Group 1 winner. Fellow 2-year-old filly Legacy Link has atop her résumé a win in a minor Haydock Park contest from two career starts. But that Haydock performance stamped her as potential Group 1 material, and Legacy Link can take down Precise and nine others in the Fillies’ Mile.

Ohana Honor poised to pounce on lack of pace in Sycamore

Coady Media
Utah Beach returns to Keeneland, his favorite course, trying to sweep the track’s two 1 1/2-mile, older-horse turf stakes this year.

We know that Grand Sonata’s entire 2025 campaign revolved around the Turf Cup on Sept. 6 at Kentucky Downs because his trainer, Todd Pletcher, said as much. Of course it did. The Turf Cup this year paid out purse money just shy of $2.5 million.

Many horses dislike the quirky Kentucky Downs course. Grand Sonata won the 2024 Turf Cup over it. Not this time. Wide much of the race and one-paced at the end of it, Grand Sonata checked in sixth, and Friday’s Sycamore Stakes at Keeneland feels more like an afterthought than an encore.

Intrepido (left) wins the American Pharoah. It will cost $100,000 to supplement him to the Breeders' Cup.

Napoleon Solo, the dominant 6 1/2-length winner of last Saturday’s Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Aqueduct, will bypass the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Oct. 31 at Del Mar, be put away for the season, and point to a 3-year-old campaign, trainer Chad Summers said Wednesday.

“He ran really fast and really hard and we feel it’s the fair thing to do,” said Summers, who trains Napoleon Solo for Al Gold. “It wasn’t an easy decision but at the same they went six furlongs in 1:07.88, just missed Kelly Kip’s [six-furlong] track record, and ran the fourth fastest Champagne.
