OLDSMAR, Fla. – Flameaway and Catholic Boy, the top two finishers Saturday in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, appear to be headed in separate directions as their connections start looking farther down the road to the 144th Kentucky Derby.

Field favored at 2-1 in Pool 2 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Catholic Boy will enter the Sam F. Davis Stakes next month off his win in the Remsen.

The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, is the 2-1 favorite after the first of three days of wagering into Pool 2 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

With $72,268 in the win pool and another $21,560 in exactas, the field is favored over individual interests Bolt d’Oro (5-1), Good Magic (8-1), Audible (11-1), and McKinzie (12-1).

All wagering was suspended on Montauk (No. 15) just prior to the opening of Pool 2 at noon Eastern Friday when the colt’s connections informed track officials he has been declared from Derby consideration.

Seven horses added to Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2

At 8-1, McKinzie has the lowest odds for an individually listed horse in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

Seven new names are in the lineup for Pool 2 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern for the customary three-day run.

The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, has been pegged as the 7-2 morning-line favorite in Pool 2 by Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia, with McKinzie the shortest individually listed interest at 8-1. Then come Bolt d’Oro and Good Magic, both at 10-1, and Audible and Mask, both at 12-1.

Romans may have another Derby contender in Storm Runner

Untamed Domain could try dirt in Tampa Bay Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Untamed Domain could make his dirt debut in the March 10 Tampa Bay Derby as he attempts to enter the Kentucky Derby picture following a decent third-place finish as the 6-5 favorite Saturday in the Dania Beach Stakes on the Gulfstream turf.

“Right now, Tampa is our choice,” said Terry Finley, president of the colt’s ownership group, West Point Thoroughbreds.

Strike Power may try Fountain of Youth next

Strike Power wins the Swale Stakes last weekend at Gulfstream.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Strike Power passed another test with flying colors by winning the Swale Stakes last weekend at Gulfstream Park. Now comes deeper water for a 3-year-old colt who has earned the right to give the Kentucky Derby trail a try.

Trainer Mark Hennig said the March 3 Fountain of Youth could be the next start for Strike Power after the chestnut Speightstown colt led all the way in a dominating 2 3/4-length victory here Saturday under leading jockey Luis Saez in the Grade 3 Swale at seven furlongs. The Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth goes at 1 1/16 miles.
