Sittin On Go draws first blood with Iroquois victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - About three hours before the 2020 Kentucky Derby was run, Sittin On Go announced himself as the first arrival on the road to the 2021 Kentucky Derby. The colt remained unbeaten in his short career by springing a $50 upset in the Grade 3, $200,000 Iroquois Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs, the first points-scoring race toward next year's Derby.

Kentucky Derby: Finnick the Fierce scratch reduces field to 16

Finnick the Fierce was scratched from the Kentucky Derby on Friday.

The one-eyed gelding Finnick the Fierce has been scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby, leaving an expected field of 16 starters.

Veterinarian Arnaldo Monge, who owns Finnick the Fierce with trainer Rey Hernandez, said that the gelding typically "carries himself a little funny," and that this week official veterinarians had been keeping a close eye on the horse. Finnick the Fierce lost his right eye as a foal.

Kentucky Derby: King Guillermo will scratch after spiking a fever

If King Guillermo recovers quickly, the Oct. 3 Preakness is a possible next start.

King Guillermo will be scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby after developing a fever on Wednesday afternoon, his trainer, Juan Carlos Avila, said on Thursday.

King Guillermo turned in a regular gallop on Wednesday morning, but did not train on Thursday morning. Avila said that the colt had developed “a little problem” and would be thoroughly examined by a veterinarian. He posted on his Twitter account just after 4:30 p.m. on Thursday that the colt would indeed need to withdraw from the race.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Seventeen years later and Jack Knowlton is still asked about the yellow school bus that took him, his partners in Sackatoga Stable, their family, and friends from a downtown Louisville hotel to Churchill Downs for the 2003 Kentucky Derby.

As Knowlton, the managing partner of Sackatoga, tells it, fellow partner Dave Mahan asked a manager at the Galt House hotel how to transport 53 people to the track. Mahan was quoted a price of $3,600 for a luxury bus.
