Soup and Sandwich has won both his starts, including this 89-Beyer debut victory on Jan. 28 at Gulfstream.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The colt named Soup and Sandwich will get his shot at making the Kentucky Derby after passing a simple test in an allowance race Wednesday at Tampa Bay Downs.

Soup and Sandwich, a gray Florida-bred by the red-hot sire Into Mischief, faced just two opponents in what amounted to little more than a paid workout when getting a mile and 40 yards in 1:39.65 with jockey Antonio Gallardo up. He earned an 80 Beyer Speed Figure, which followed an eye-catching Jan. 28 debut in a 6 1/2-furlong Gulfstream maiden race that resulted in an 89 Beyer.

Kentucky Derby: Fire At Will gets his chance in Fountain of Youth

Barbara D. Livingston
Fire At Will has worked seven straight weeks over the dirt at Gulfstream, including this bullet five-furlong move on Jan 23.

Fire At Will already has proven he’s a terrific grass horse, highlighted by his victory last year in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. But there’s only one time in his lifespan when he’ll be a 3-year-old in the springtime, and that requires serious consideration for the Kentucky Derby.

That time is now, so Fire At Will is going to be given an opportunity to see if he can compete with some of the division’s best dirt runners when he takes on the likes of Greatest Honour, the Holy Bull winner, in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Gretzky the Great kicks off season in fortified Battaglia Memorial

Michael Burns
Gretzky the Great takes the Grade 1 Summer Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths at Woodbine. The Battaglia will be his first start since he finished sixth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

The John Battaglia Memorial Stakes already held an important place on Turfway Park’s winter calendar as a springboard to the track’s signature Kentucky Derby prep, the Jeff Ruby Steaks. This year, following Turfway’s acquisition by Churchill Downs, it has added importance with Derby qualifying points of its own, as Churchill has bolstered the prep series at its northern Kentucky track.
