OCEANPORT, N.J. - Pam Shavelson doesn't ship horses to Monmouth often from her Philadelphia Park base, but when she has in the last three weeks, her horses have been deadly.

SALEM, N.H. - The career of New England mainstay Pic a Lil is over after an accident earlier this month that nearly cost her her life.

"She was feeling good under the shed row" said George Handy, who trained the 5-year-old Pic a Lil throughout her career. "Something startled her, she jumped around and stepped on a fan. The fan short-circuited and shocked her.

Nanie's Dinner returns to the Louisiana Downs turf course, over which she is 3 for 4, in Saturday's $50,000 Sangue Handicap. The 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares has also drawn stakes winners Euryanthe and Taffy, and serves as the local prep for the $150,000 River Cities Breeders' Cup on Sept. 15.

Nanie's Dinner has won three stakes in four starts on the local grass, her most recent turf win a six-length romp in the $40,000 Honeymoon on July 14. She comes into the Sangue on the heels of a second-place finish to Taffy in the $40,000 Delicada, run over dirt Aug. 5.

MIAMI - A favorable post position could help Castlebrook regain her place atop the local filly and mare handicap division when she takes on six rivals, including 3-year-old Valid Forbes, in Saturday's $50,000 Nancy's Glitter Stakes at Calder.

The Nancy's Glitter, named for the only filly to sweep all three legs of Calder's Florida Stallion Series, is restricted to registered Florida-breds and will be decided at 1 1/16 miles.

The race highlights an outstanding 12-race program that offers in excess of $300,000 in purse money.

Very early in his 3-year-old season, Fajardo was considered a fringe candidate for the 2000 Triple Crown.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - If this is the Arlington Sprint, then Bet on Sunshine must be in town.

Indeed, a horse van from Louisville brought Bet on Sunshine to Chicago on Tuesday, when the 9-year-old gelding began final preparations for the richest sprint race of the Arlington meet. On Saturday, owner David Holloway and 20 of his closest relatives and friends will be on hand, hoping that Bet on Sunshine can win his 20th career race under Holloway's yellow-and-blue silks.

Betting on races at Saratoga Race Course has not shifted toward the wagers with newly lowered takeout rates, according to figures provided by the New York Racing Association.

Bettors at the track, who account for approximately 22 percent of the Saratoga handle, seem to have adapted to the new rates, wagering much more on the reduced takeout bets. But horseplayers around the country have not followed suit, and the overall handle has not changed.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It's just not that easy to beat City Zip at Saratoga. Trainer Linda Rice is hoping that proves the case again when she saddles City Zip in Saturday's $200,000 King's Bishop on the Travers undercard.

City Zip, undefeated in four stakes at Saratoga, is the likely favorite over seven other 3-year-olds entered in the Grade 1 King's Bishop at seven furlongs.

Last year, City Zip pulled off a rare sweep when he became only the fourth 2-year-old to win the Sanford, Saratoga Special, and the Hopeful, which he won in a dead-heat with Yonaguska.
