Finger Lakes: Filly beats colts

John Grabowski had ridden Shesastonecoldfox and Smokieisabandit to two wins apiece. When the 2-year-olds, both trained by Anthony Ferraro, faced each other for the first time in the $137,900 New York Breeders' Futurity at Finger Lakes, Grabowski logically chose the colt Smokieisabandit over the filly Shesastonecoldfox.

Michael Davila, picking up the mount on Shesastonecoldfox ($4.50), guided her to a wire-to-wire 1 3/4-length victory in the 39th running of the Futurity. Grabowski, meanwhile, was fifth aboard Smokieisabandit.

New phenom on horizon

Michael J. Marten
Officer, with exercise rider Dana Barnes, will be heavily favored in the the Del Mar Futurity, a race Bob Baffert has won the last five years.

DEL MAR, Calif. - They wear the same green-and-white colors in the afternoon and stay near one another the rest of the day in their barn at Del Mar. And even though Officer has been as brilliant as a 2-year-old as Point Given was dominating at age 3, it would be oversimplifying to say that Officer will now replace Point Given for trainer Bob Baffert and Prince Ahmed Salman's The Thoroughbred Corporation.
