Disco Rico returns

Top East Coast sprinter Disco Rico makes his first start since winning the Grade 3 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap in Friday's $100,000 Paterson Handicap at The Meadowlands.

Say Florida Sandy, another tough sprinter from the East, is entered in the six-furlong Paterson, but is also among the entries in Friday's $75,000-added Gen. Douglas MacArthur Handicap at Belmont Park, where, if he starts, he would be a heavy favorite.

Five entered the Paterson. Disco Rico and Say Florida Sandy were each assigned highweight of 123 pounds, six to nine more pounds than their rivals.

Moccasin tip of iceberg

It's on to graded stakes for French Assault

French Assault and Victory Road will both advance to graded stakes for their next starts after winning the $100,000 El Joven and $100,000 La Senorita last Saturday night at Retama Park near San Antonio. Is Drysdale's Atto Mile nightmare to end?

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - No one in Sunday's Atto Mile has had more ups and downs in the race than trainer Neil Drysdale.

He sent out Labeeb to win a thrilling 1998 edition of the Mile. His Hawksley Hill finished first in 1999, but was disqualified and placed fourth when the stewards ruled that his rider, Pat Day, had hit one of his rivals with his whip.

Drysdale was back last year with Kahal, who got caught in a speed duel and faded to finish 11th in a field of 13.

Two turns a first

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - On the Game, one of the more promising 3-year-olds at Woodbine, will experiment around two turns in Friday's 1 1/8-mile headliner, a $62,500 optional claimer.

Greatballsoffire should be favored as she seeks her third win in a row in the supporting feature on the card, a $62,500 claimer for fillies and mares.

On the Game was bet down to 3-5 when he debuted in a six-furlong maiden special here July 12. He came from just off the pace while running greenly to prevail by 5 1/4 lengths in 1:10.60, which was good for a Beyer Speed Figure of 99.

Relocated Laurel meet opens

A change in venue awaits Maryland racing fans Thursday when Laurel Park's fall meet opens at Pimlico.

The Maryland Jockey Club was forced to relocate Laurel Park's 24-day meet to Pimlico because of repairs needed in Laurel Park's grandstand, where chunks of glass were breaking free from the building's glass enclosure.

Lou Raffetto Jr., the MJC's chief operating officer, said he is "cautiously optimistic" Laurel Park's structural problems will be corrected and the track will reopen on Oct. 17 for the remainder of the year.

Ball in Tiznow's court

DEL MAR, Calif. - Point Given might be the leading contender for Horse of the Year, but he can no longer answer any challenges to that title. That is why this weekend's comeback race is so crucial for Tiznow, the reigning Horse of the Year, who on Tuesday flew from California to New York for his long-awaited return to racing in Saturday's $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park.
