Keeneland reduces takeout, pick 5 possible

The takeout rate at Keeneland's fall meet this year will be reduced to 16 percent for all wagers, racing officials said Friday.

The cut will make exotic and superexotic bets at Keeneland the cheapest in the country. Takeout on those bets, which include exactas, daily doubles, trifectas, pick threes and superfectas, was previously 19 percent. Nick Nicholson, the president of Keeneland, said in a release that the track was influenced by the decision this summer by the New York Racing Association to reduce the takeout on most bets.

Albert defends his turf

Vincent Dusovic/Horsephotos
Tiznow trains at Belmont under exercise rider Ramon Arciga. With defense of his Classic title the main objective, he makes his first start in six months in Saturday's Woodward.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Even if it means running against last year's Horse of the Year, last year's Preakness winner, and Bobby Frankel, trainer Nick Zito has to feel lucky just to be back at Belmont Park.

Super Derby next target for E Dubai

ELMONT, N.Y. - E Dubai, runner-up to Point Given in last month's Travers Stakes at Saratoga, is being pointed to the Grade 1 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Sept. 23, his connections said Thursday.

The Super Derby, a $500,000 race run at 1 1/4 miles, is the last Grade 1 of the year run strictly for 3-year-olds.

"It's a Grade 1 race, it looks like he'll have a pretty good chance in there,' said Tom Albertrani, an assistant to Godolphin's head trainer, Saeed bin Suroor. "The other option would be the Jockey Club Gold Cup, where he'd have to run against older horses."

Collect Call should collect Oaks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Collect Call figures to be a solid favorite in the $175,000 British Columbia Breeders' Cup Oaks Saturday afternoon at Hastings Park. She'll be facing eight other 3-year-old fillies in the 1 1/8-mile Oaks, but none of them has her graded stakes credentials and they won't get a break in the weights, with all starters carrying 121 pounds.

Also on Saturday's card are the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity and the $35,000 Cover Girl Handicap for fillies and mares. Both races are at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Rancour returns - at lower odds

EDMONTON, Alberta - Rancour will try to prove his upset victory in the Westerner at Northlands Park Aug. 25 was no fluke when he faces six rivals in Saturday's $100,000 Speed to Spare Championship.

With the distance of the Speed to Spare 1 3/8 miles, Rancour will be asked to travel a sixteenth of a mile farther than in the Westerner, which he won by 7 1/2 lengths under Quincy Welch at 19-1.

'Overboard' has twice the edge

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Swept Overboard, who has been racing well versus the top sprinters in Southern California, looks like a standout when he heads a field of four in the Grade 3, $150,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint on Saturday.

Among Swept Overboard's three foes is Lexicon, who won this race last year and is coming off a solid effort in classified allowance company at Del Mar. But the others, Riotous Richie and You and You Alone, seem badly overmatched.

Rested and ready, Fleet Renee looks tough

ELMONT, N.Y. - If Fleet Renee is as good off a 10-week layoff as she was here in June off an eight-week freshening, she should win Saturday's Grade 1 Gazelle Handicap at Belmont Park.

When last seen at Belmont, Fleet Renee ran the race of her life to win the Grade 1 Mother Goose by 5 1/2 lengths. Although she hadn't run in eight weeks, her time of 1:47.19 was the second-fastest clocking for the Mother Goose in 43 runnings at nine furlongs.
