Hot stable looking golden in feature

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Stronach Stable had a stellar day on Sunday at Woodbine, winning four races with three different trainers, including the Grade 2 Canadian Handicap with Diadella.

The powerful outfit could continue its winning ways when it sends out Golden Coronain in Wednesday's allowance feature, the prep for the Sept. 29 Wonder Where Stakes.

Five other 3-year-old fillies were entered to run about 1 1/8 miles on the turf - Dark Ending, Torrantula, Night Edition, Rare Vision, and My Real Quiet Lady. Foxy Connection and Madame Red were entered for the main track only.

Hyder can handle this level

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Hyder, who won in a similar spot during the fair season, looks tough to beat in Wednesday's $34,000 allowance-optional claiming feature at Bay Meadows.

Hyder, a $16,000 claim by trainer R.L. Martin nearly a year ago, won at this second allowance level in January, and has been racing well at the same level all summer by going in for the optional claiming price of $40,000. In five recent starts at the level, he has two seconds, a third, and a fourth in addition to his recent win.

Beaumes de Venise has the speed to burn

POMONA, Calif. - Speed handicappers will have trouble getting past Beaumes de Venise on Wednesday at Fairplex Park.

Fresh from earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 107 in a classified sprint at Del Mar, Beaumes de Venise will heavily favored over course specialist The Morris Monroe in the $50,000 Aprisa Handicap.

A field of six entered the six-furlong Aprisa, the first of two sprints for older horses at the 18-day Los Angeles County Fair meet. The 6 1/2-furlong Governor's Cup Handicap will be run closing day, Sept. 24.

Puglisi hurt, but just a little

POMONA, Calif. - Jockey Iggy Puglisi was not seriously injured Saturday when he was unseated on the first turn of the Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex Park, but a sore back prevented him from riding all but one of his six scheduled mounts Sunday.

Numerous Times victorious in Atto Mile

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Unbeaten local runner Numerous Times prevailed in a three-way win photo with favored Affirmed Success and Quiet Resolve while setting a course record in the Grade 1, $1 million Atto Mile at Woodbine on Sunday.

With Patrick Husbands riding, Numerous Times won the one-mile turf event by a nose over Affirmed Success and Jerry Bailey. Quiet Resolve, who won the '99 Mile by disqualification, was another nose back under Todd Kabel, who unsuccessfully claimed foul on the winner for interference early in the stretch.

Voodoo Dancer wins Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap

ELMONT, N.Y. - Voodoo Dancer bounced back from the worst turf race of her career with one of her best efforts Sunday, rallying from mid-pack to take the Grade 1, $250,000 Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap by 4 3/4 lengths before 8,465 at Belmont Park.

Shooting Party, making her turf debut, held second in her turf debut by three-quarters of a length over Wander Mom.

It was the fourth stakes win of the year for Voodoo Dancer, a 3-year-old daughter of Kingmambo, owned by Green Hills Farm and trained by Christophe Clement.

El Soprano takes Summer Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Longshot El Soprano overcame a troubled trip to upset 3-5 favorite Miesque's Approval in Sunday's Grade 2, $181,750 Summer Stakes for 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

El Soprano was checked hard by Gary Stevens early on the turn while running well off the pace in the one-mile turf event. Union Place and Open Concert dueled through fractions of :22.70 and :45.20 while being tracked by Classic Runaway.

Lido Palace does it again

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bobby Frankel's dream run continued as did Nick Zito's nightmarish summer in Saturday's $500,000 Woodward Stakes.

The Frankel-trained Lido Palace, who knocked off Zito's Albert the Great in last month's Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, upset Albert the Great on his home turf of Belmont Park, taking the Grade 1 Woodward by a length before a crowd of 12,059.

With Anticipation goes gate to wire

ELMONT, N.Y. - A switch to the grass has done wonders for With Anticipation, who won his second consecutive Grade 1 Saturday at Belmont Park in the $500,000 Man o' War, by 2 1/4 lengths over the favorite, Silvano.

Earlier this year, trainer Jonathan Sheppard decided to move With Anticipation to the turf after a few lackluster performances on the dirt. Now, Sheppard, a Hall of Fame trainer, has a major contender for the Breeders' Cup Turf.
