Feature race unseen by most

ALTOONA, Iowa - Saturday evening's co-feature at Prairie Meadows was an invitational for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses at 440 yards, but few people got to see the race.

Special Referral flipped after the field was loaded in the gate, necessitating a late scratch, and the remainder of the field was backed out of the gate. The track's television crew apparently was unaware that the runners were being reloaded into the gate and failed to record the race, so fans at simulcast outlets, as well as ontrack patrons watching on TV, could not see the race.

Attard: Those were the days - but these are, too

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Larry Attard will have mixed emotions when he steps up to the podium at the induction ceremonies for the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame here Thursday.

The 49-year-old Attard will be justifiably proud of the distinguished 25-year riding career for which he is being honored. But he will always feel a tinge of regret about the premature end to his days in the saddle, brought about by a series of concussions that forced him to give up his chosen profession.

New Bakhoor plan: Win Albany

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Any trainer will tell you that the best-laid plans often go awry in this business.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin knows this first-hand with Bakhoor, who could be a slight choice in Wednesday's $150,000 Albany, the final leg of the Big Apple Triple for 3-year-old New York-breds at Saratoga.

An overflow field of 13 entered the 1 1/8-mile Albany, but only 12 will be permitted to run.

All in a weekend's work for Frankel

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Although he probably could have floated cross-country, trainer Bobby Frankel left Saratoga Monday morning to catch a plane back to San Diego to check on his California string at Del Mar.
