Frankel sweeps Del Mar Handicap

DEL MAR, Calif. - Timboroa's victory in Saturday's $250,000 Del Mar Handicap led a sweep of the first three positions by horses trained by Bobby Frankel.

Frankel, who started three of the seven starters in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap, finished second and third with the entry of Northern Quest and Super Quercus.

Timboroa ($8.80) was always close to pacesetter Kudos, the 8-5 favorite.

Point Given, ridden by Gary Stevens, wins the Travers by 3 1/2 lengths over E Dubai. The victory follows wins in the Preakness, Belmont, and Haskell.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - He is owned by a prince, and Point Given proved Saturday that he is the king of the Thoroughbred world.

Before a crowd of 60,486 - the largest ever to witness the Travers Stakes - Point Given blew past E Dubai approaching the furlong marker and rolled to a 3 1/2-length victory. E Dubai, who dueled with Free of Love early, held second, 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Dollar Bill.

Completing the order of finish were A P Valentine, Free of Love, Scorpion, Volponi, Hadrian's Wall, and Harrisand.

Monmouth: Maypole Dance wires field in turf sprint

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Maypole Dance rushed to the lead under Roberto Alvarado and led every step of the way to win the $50,000 Thomas J. Malley Stakes at five furlongs on the turf for fillies and mares. Maypole Dance ($20.40), a 4-year-old trained by Bessie Gruwell, set rapid fractions of 21.20 seconds and 43.80, and finished in 55.76 over a turf course labeled good. Wilma Lee finished 1 1/2 lengths back in second, while Go Carolina finished third. Maypole Dance improved her career record to 5-1-5 in 12 starts, with a turf record of 4-1-1 in six starts.

Ellis Park: Fajardo makes it three in a row in Governor's Cap

Fajardo, allowed to settle in last place early, rolled to his third straight victory Saturday in the $73,750 Governor's Handicap at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., drawing off easily to win the one-mile race by 1 1/2 lengths under Joe Johnson.

Owned by Don Dizney and trained by Bill Mott, Fajardo paid $7.40 after finishing in 1:36.04 over a sloppy track. Dash for Daylight, the 2-1 favorite, was second after dueling throughout with Storm Day, who was another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Castlebrook wins at Calder

MIAMI - Castlebrook regained bragging rights as the top filly and mare handicap runner at Calder when she rallied to a two-length victory over Coolbythepool in Saturday's $54,000 Nancy's Glitter Stakes for registered Florida-breds.

Castlebrook moved to the top of her division earlier in the meet with victories in the Miss Jealski and Mia's Hope handicaps but disappointed when finishing a well-beaten fourth behind Racing for Pahm in the Liberada Handicap. In the Liberada her chances were somewhat compromised when she had to break from an outside post.

Bet on Sunshine by an inch

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Four years ago, Bet on Sunshine dead-heated with Illinois-bred Hunk of Class to win the Arlington Sprint.

On Saturday, the same result very nearly occurred. Another Illinois-bred, 26-1 shot Tic N Tin, led every step of the way in the $100,000 Sprint before being beaten an inch by Bet on Sunshine, who won for the 20th time in 40 career starts. Bet on Sunshine returned $3.40 as the favorite after finishing six furlongs in 1:10.06 over a sloppy track.

Squirtle Squirt all the way

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - City Zip's perfect 4-for-4 record at Saratoga ended on Saturday in the $200,000 King's Bishop when he finished third to Squirtle Squirt.

California invader Squirtle Squirt, from the red-hot barn of Bobby Frankel, led all the way, winning by 3 1/4 lengths over Illusioned. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to City Zip, who had won his previous four races at Saratoga.

Eight 3-year-olds ran in the Grade 1 King's Bishop on the Travers undercard.

Miss Santa Ana takes on winners

DEL MAR, Calif. - Miss Santa Ana lived up to her reputation with a six-length win in her career debut on July 23 at Del Mar. On Monday, she makes her first start against winners in a six-furlong allowance race for California-bred fillies and mares, a race she can win despite a tough draw.

Baze, Espinoza hit with whip fines

DEL MAR, Calif. - Jockeys Victor Espinoza and Tyler Baze have received substantial fines from Del Mar stewards for recent whip violations.

Baze was fined $2,500 for two incidents of hitting a horse on the flank and causing a break in the skin. According to steward George Slender, the incidents occurred aboard Presidential Pull, who finished fourth in the fifth race on Aug. 12, and Jack Grandi, who finished finished last in the seventh race on Aug. 16.
