Bailey, still in a dogfight, ties own record for meet wins

SARATOGA N.Y. - Jerry Bailey rode two winners on Friday to equal his own meet record of 50 victories, set here last summer. He tied the mark winning the fourth race aboard Miu Miu for leading trainer Bill Mott. It was the 20th win of the meet for Mott, which also equaled the meet record, established by Todd Pletcher in 1998.

"It's great equaling the record, but the record doesn't mean a thing if I don't beat Johnny [Velazquez] for the title," said Bailey. "Right now my main goal is to finish the meet with one more win than John."

Tammy Faulkner/Horsephotos
Cashier's Dream, ridden by Donnie Meche, romps to a 6 1/2-length victory in the Spinaway. Her time for seven furlongs was 1:23.47.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Cashier's Dream, a Michigan-bred who launched her career racing under a $50,000 claiming tag, added her name to a list of Spinaway Stakes winners that includes champions Ruffian, Affectionately, Top Flight, and Numbered Account with an easy six-length victory over Smok'n Frolic in the Grade 1 dash for 2-year-old fillies at Saratoga on Friday.

For Cashier's Dream, her victory in the $200,000 Spinaway was her fourth in five career starts and came just 18 days after she suffered her lone setback when outgamed by You in the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes.

Del Mar pick six carryover hits $158,022

DEL MAR, Calif.- Saturday's program at Del Mar is highlighted by a pick six carryover of $158,022 on the 10-race program.

The pick six covers the fifth through 10th races, which on Saturday includes two stakes. The carryover was caused after a string of longshots early in Friday's pick six were too difficult for bettors to link together.

Here are the changes for Saturday's pick six races:

In the fifth race, the also eligibles are scratched, leaving 10 to go a mile on turf for $45,000 to $50,000 claimers.

Tamara Princess reigns in Torrey Pines

DEL MAR, Calif.- Unbeaten Tamara Princess dragged jockey Mike Smith to the front on the final turn of the $81,400 Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar on Friday and cruised to a third straight victory.

A half-sister to 2000 champion older female Riboletta, Tamara Princess won her first stakes in the Torrey Pines, restricted to 3-year-old fillies that had not won a first-place purse of $50,000 at a mile or over this year.

Entry erases all betting value

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sunday's $109,400 Seaway Stakes at Woodbine features an intriguing matchup between the unbeaten 3-year-old Meadow Gem and Kinghaven Farm's talented 4-year-old Torrid Affair.

But the seven-furlong dash for fillies and mares shapes up as a poor betting race, because Meadow Gem, Torrid Affair, and Ahead by a Century are coupled in what will be a short-priced entry. Kinghaven owns a small percentage of Meadow Gem, who is trained by Bob Tiller, who also trains of Ahead by a Century.

Rivals find no joy in the loss of Point Given

The stunning announcement Friday of the retirement of Point Given brought mixed emotions from two trainers whose horses may stand to benefit greatly from his absence.

Joe Orseno and Ronny Werner, whose charges Macho Uno and Touch Tone square off in Monday's $500,000 Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park, were saddened to hear the news even though it may help their horses down the road.

El Corredor's new big-horse status on line

DEL MAR, Calif. - With little warning, El Corredor has emerged as the top older horse in Bob Baffert's barn. The sudden retirement of Point Given and the form decline of Captain Steve have thrust 4-year-old El Corredor into a role of greater prominence, less than two months before the Breeders' Cup.

Proud Man ripe for an upset?

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - While Proud Man is certainly the most accomplished of the nine

3-year-olds entered in Sunday's $100,000 Saranac Handicap at Saratoga, he may also be at his most vulnerable in the Grade 3 race, which is run at 1 3/16 miles on turf.

Proud Man, a winner of four Grade 3 stakes this year, has not been out in 11 weeks, has yet to race beyond nine furlongs and, as the 122-pound highweight, must concede four to 10 pounds to the field.

Those factors give hope to his rival trainers, including Mark Hennig, who sends out Strategic Partner.

Smith may prep 'Fancy'

EDMONTON, Alberta - Trainer Red Smith finds himself faced with a problem on how to fill in the time for his brilliant Fancy As between the Canadian Derby of Aug. 25 and the B.C. Derby on Sept. 29.

That's a span of five weeks, and there obviously is a need to keep Fancy As sharp for the next big race.

Tentatively, Smith has nominated Fancy As for this Saturday's $100,000 Speed to Spare Championship at Northlands Park.
