Two turns a first

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - On the Game, one of the more promising 3-year-olds at Woodbine, will experiment around two turns in Friday's 1 1/8-mile headliner, a $62,500 optional claimer.

Greatballsoffire should be favored as she seeks her third win in a row in the supporting feature on the card, a $62,500 claimer for fillies and mares.

On the Game was bet down to 3-5 when he debuted in a six-furlong maiden special here July 12. He came from just off the pace while running greenly to prevail by 5 1/4 lengths in 1:10.60, which was good for a Beyer Speed Figure of 99.

Relocated Laurel meet opens

A change in venue awaits Maryland racing fans Thursday when Laurel Park's fall meet opens at Pimlico.

The Maryland Jockey Club was forced to relocate Laurel Park's 24-day meet to Pimlico because of repairs needed in Laurel Park's grandstand, where chunks of glass were breaking free from the building's glass enclosure.

Lou Raffetto Jr., the MJC's chief operating officer, said he is "cautiously optimistic" Laurel Park's structural problems will be corrected and the track will reopen on Oct. 17 for the remainder of the year.

The Petalino-trained Rare Cure earned a fees-paid berth into the $500,000 Super Derby on Monday when he won the $50,000 Prelude.

"We got invited, so we're planning on going to the Super Derby," said Petalino.

Ball in Tiznow's court

DEL MAR, Calif. - Point Given might be the leading contender for Horse of the Year, but he can no longer answer any challenges to that title. That is why this weekend's comeback race is so crucial for Tiznow, the reigning Horse of the Year, who on Tuesday flew from California to New York for his long-awaited return to racing in Saturday's $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park.

DQ'd Saint Damien to make amends

CHICAGO - Phase three of Arlington's marathon 4 1/2-month meet begins this week. Gone is the Summer Festival, with its heightened purse structure, the dramatic build-up to the Arlington Million, and a steady stream of live runners from Kentucky.

September meets at Turfway Park and Kentucky Downs will take some Kentucky-based horses from Arlington's meet, and gradually, by October, when Keeneland opens, racing will look here very much like it does when the Chicago scene shifts to Hawthorne in November.

In South America, Painter was an early sensation, winning his first six career starts, including three Group 1 stakes. In the nearly two years since he first raced in the United States, however, Painter has been a huge disappointment, unable to win a single race.

After failing in Southern California for trainer Ron McAnally, the now 5-year-old Painter is attempting to resurrect his once-promising career in Florida under the care of Frank Gomez.
