Winners seem easy to pick for this year's B.C. Turf awards

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The annual B.C. Turf awards dinner isn't held until next spring, so for those who can't wait, here is a look at the horses who are likely to take home top prize in their divisions. In most cases there appears to be a clear winner.

No Time Flat should get the award for the top

2-year-old colt or gelding. Trained by Terry Marshall, the homebred gelding is the only horse who won more than one stakes and his win in the

1 1/16-mile Ascot Graduation Breeders' Cup more than made up for his dull showing in the Jack Diamond Futurity.

PORTLAND, Ore. - A glance at the trainer standings after the first weekend of the Portland Meadows meeting reveals something familiar, at least to veteran fans, as Martin Kenney's name is right up there at the top.

Officer: Will he or won't he?

ARCADIA, Calif. - After a win in the Champagne Stakes and a fifth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont last weekend, Officer returns to his California roots Saturday when he starts in the $125,000 California Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita.

Or, he may never leave trainer Bob Baffert's barn.

As of Thursday, Officer was an intended runner, but he could be withdrawn as late as an hour before Saturday's race without reason, a privilege granted to stakes entrants in California. On Thursday, Baffert was in a cantankerous mood when asked about the colt's status.

Romanceishope still going strong entering Classic

ARCADIA, Calif. - Romanceishope is at the end of a long campaign, but you wouldn't know it heading into the $250,000 California Cup Classic on Saturday at Santa Anita.

"This horse is a train now, he doesn't act like he's tired," trainer Jenine Sahadi said, adding, "he's a very big, strong horse."

Deputy Strike goes shorter

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The 1 1/16-mile distance of Saturday's $100,000 Rushing Man Stakes at The Meadowlands should be the key factor in the turf race for 3-year-olds.

Deputy Strike, trained by Gary Contessa, won the Rutgers Stakes here Oct. 12, and faces several of his rivals from that race in the Rushing Man, including favorites Moomtaz and One Eyed Joker, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Powder Break could go two ways

MIAMI - Tropical Storm Michelle, forecast to hit south Florida this weekend, could have a lot to say about the outcome of Saturday's $50,000, one-mile Powder Break Handicap. The race is scheduled for the turf but will more than likely end up being decided over a wet main track.

The uncertainty of the conditions for the Powder Break resulted in 19 fillies and mares being entered for the race including old nemeses Castlebrook and Coolbythepool, both of whom are far better on dirt than turf.

Hoosier seeks reduced schedule

Hoosier Park plans to cut 10 programs from its live Thoroughbred racing schedule next year, according to a dates application it filed on Thursday, as part of a drastic reduction in live racing at the Indiana track.

Hoosier applied for only 120 live racing days in its application, down from 193 in 2001. Most of the cuts will be felt on the Standardbred side - Hoosier applied for only 60 days of live Standardbred racing, down from 123 in 2001.

Hangonslewpyhangon can upset

PHOENIX - Hangonslewpyhangon hadn't run since April 7, but with a fast-closing third in a recent comeback sprint issued a warning: He is going to be tough to beat in Saturday's $30,000 Walter Cluer Handicap at Turf Paradise.

Hangonslewpyhangon heads a field of 10 in the 7 1/2-furlong race on turf. He is not the highweight, carrying 120 pounds, while Eagleton gets in at 122. But he looms the horse to beat. Why? Because he has stakes wins on the Turf Paradise turf course at about this distance, including last year's Blaze O'Brien and Kokopelli.

Skiffington's big decision

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Trainer Tom Skiffington has some interesting propositions to think about as he tries to determine where next to run Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf runner-up Spook Express.

While Skiffington is leaning toward running her in the $500,000, Grade 1 Matriarch at Hollywood Park on Nov. 25, he was contacted by officials of the Japan Racing Association, who inquired if Skiffington would be interested in running Spook Express against the boys in the $3.9 million Japan Cup on the same day.
